  3. Features of Linux

  4. Features of Linux • Linux is a free operating system. • Linux comes with most of the required software pre-installed. • Linux never gets slow. • Linux can even run on oldest hardware • With Linux, you get the highest degree of possible customization.

  5. Features of Linux • Security has always been the number one priority with Linux • There do not exist viruses for the Linux platform • If you already know what fragmentation is, and are already used to defragmenting your disk every month or so, here is the short version : Linux doesn't need defragmenting.

Along with other programmers creates the tools needed to make a UNIX compatible OS. • 1985 Professor Andy Tannenbaum creates a UNIX like operating system called Minix. • 1991 Building on the concepts in Minix, LinusTorvalds (Finnish college student) develops Linux along with help from other users on the web.

  9. Linux Journey 1991-2011

  10. 1991: LinusTorvalds in college 22-year old Finnish computer programmer LinusTorvalds became interested in operating systems and released his own, which he called Linux (version 0.01). Opening with the message "Hello everybody out there,"

  11. 1992: Making Linux free Linux is licensed under the GPL, a software license written by Richard Stallman. This decision keeps Linux legally protected but free, and will contribute largely to its coming success.
