  1. Filling the Gaps and Pushing Ahead Online Learning

  2. What is online learning? • Online classes • Being used nationwide at all levels • Proven to help students: • Gain time • Get more personalized learning-pace • Get more engaging material • Get more individualized attention • (Young, Birtolo& McElman, 2009) • Allows students to interact with content in a collaborative, multimodal environment • (Lemke & Coughlin, 2009)

  3. What can it do for LKMS? • Help students that are not serviced within the regular education setting • Provide students with new opportunities to connect with the world, making learning more authentic • Provide students with the chance to access the newest information and experts on a regular basis • Encourage self-directed learning • Motivate • (Lemke & Coughlin, 2009)

  4. Authentic learning • Requires that students: • Connect with others • Create something new with prior and gained knowledge • Collaborate and share • Do the work as actual professionals would • Interact with experts • Being connected is the best way to do this and online classes are the perfect environment to facilitate this type of learning

  5. Remediation • Could replace our “class within a class” model • Provide those students with personalized learning, specifically designed to meet their needs • Motivate students that do not work well in a traditional classroom setting • Increased feedback based on the nature of technology – programs can instantly provide feedback and can guide students to the next step automatically based on performance • Can meet the needs of more learning styles through constant multimodal learning • (Lemke & Coughlin, 2009)

  6. Advancement • Offer as alternative for students in gifted program or even just gifted in certain area • Advance them through curriculum more quickly, while not singling them out in the regular education classroom • Aid in tracking them in their gifted area, connecting them to the most authentic possible learning, as often as possible • Prepared to self-direct their learning, so provide them with the opportunity

  7. Homebound • Offers environment for students that cannot be in the building • Several students every year are in this situation and must essentially be homeschooled with the aid of materials sent from school • Would provide proper public education to these students that is at least equal to what is being done in the classroom, with a certified educator to work with them

  8. Is it manageable? • Teachers must be trained • Use gradual application, rather than immediately diving in and trying to put all students online • Teachers must be given the time • If it replaces the class within a class model, it could free teachers who do it for an additional plan hour • Free, easy to use online programs exist • Models already exist from across the nation, and even within our district

  9. Can anyone do it? • It is simply good teaching, just in a new format • With proper training, just as with any breakthrough in education, any teacher is capable • Applies the basic theories and structures of your classroom, just in an online setting • Teachers across the country with the same skills as us already do it

  10. Is it really good for our students? • Education is already on the path to digitizing • West already offers online summer classes for students wanting to get ahead • Most universities offer online classes • Capable of preparing our students to be successful within these alternate, self-directed settings that the classroom might not prepare them for. • Directly aligns with Goal 2 work, providing our students with individualized excellence

  11. Step into the future • Technology and the ability to self-direct one’s learning is the future of the education world – 1 in every 4 districts nationwide provide the opportunity • Blue Valley is known for being on the forefront, this just provides us with another opportunity • More importantly, our students will compete in a global market, with much work being done online, and much advancement being based off of one’s ability to enhance their knowledge on their own. • Online learning is a perfect stepping stone!
