  2. Cross the line • Disadvantage- asking questions, yes or no, not an in-depth answer, too personal and students may not answer the question. • Advantage- everyone is involved and it’s a quick and to the point. Yes or no, no maybe’s, prompts discussions, see what the students know and don’t know • What is it? • Line in the middle of the classroom • “Cross the line if”…. Yes= cross, No= stay • Cross line if you ate breakfast today. • How is it used? • To see what students know and prompt discussion • Split the class to both sides of the line • Start asking questions • This can be used in the beginning of the unit to see where students know before. • Better for younger students because they are more involved. • Topic cannot be to sensitive • Materials & Management • Classroom, Poly spots or a chalk line, an open area

  3. Demonstrations and Experiments • What is it? • Demonstrations- a method of teaching by example rather than simple explanation • Experiments- An experiment can be used to help solve practical problems and to support assumptions. • How is it used? • Experiment- Hand on learning where students figure out the meaning. Groups or pairs, individuals, students watching teacher • Demonstration- Students watching, can be hands on. • Advantages • Helps visual learners “Both” • Fun/something new “Both” • Makes learning real “Both” • Disadvantages • Takes a lot of time (Experiment) • Could be expensive (Both) • One students could do all the work. (Experiment) • Some students are not visual learners (Both) • Suggestions • Topic= Pregnancy prevention= How to use a condom, Injury prevention (CPR), Personal Health= How to brush your teeth, More science based learning. • Works for all grade levels • Experiments are better towards the end of the unit • Demonstrations could be used throughout the unit • Materials & Management • Banana's, Condoms, Groups of 3 or 4 • Demonstration 1st then students do it for themselves.
