  1. Functions By Mr. Bales

  2. Objective • By the end of the lesson, you will be able to complete function tables. • Standard 4A1.5 - Students will understand that an equation, such as y = 3x + 5, is a way for determining a second number when a first number is given.

  3. Introduce • When I start with 8, I end with 16. • When I start with 12, I end with 20. • When I start with 6, I end with 14. • Think about the rule for the pattern. • What is being added to each number at the start to get to the end? • What is the rule for the pattern?

  4. Another Example • What would the rule be for the following: • When I start with 8, I end with 16. • When I start with 30, I end with 60. • When I start with 12, I end with 24.

  5. Teach • What is the rule for the following: • When I start with 5, I end with 15. • When I start with 6, I end with 18. • When I start with 7, I end with 21. • What is the rule? • How could you write an equation to show how to find the end number? • End = 3 x start • Using this rule, if you start with 10, what do you end with?

  6. Tacos • The table shows the number of tacos four students have eaten. Each student is going to eat 2 more tacos. • How many tacos will each student have eaten after eating two more tacos?

  7. Input Function Rule Output Start with an input number. Perform one or more operations on the input. End with an output number. Function • A relationship where one number depends on another number is a function.

  8. Complete a Function Table • Let’s hear from our friend Mr. Hardesty!! • How many tacos will each student have eaten after eating two more? • Make a table.

  9. Complete a Function Table • y = 7x • The rule y = 7x means to multiply x by 7 to get y.

  10. Complete a Function Table • y = 3x + 4 • First, multiply x by 3. Then, add 4 to the product to get y.
