A little about Mr. P.… • Family / Lives in Rowan area • George Junior, Vision Quest • My number one goal is for your child to WANT to come to school! • “No one cares what you know, until they know you care.” • Own your mistakes and move on. “Would you say or do that with your parents standing right next to you?” • I put “the person” first… (confusion, illness, stress, etc.) • Everyday is a chance to be different and be better. (Raccoons) “People give up what they want most, for what they want most right now.”

  3. Homework/Projects • Homework: not graded, purpose of HW is to recall and apply learning (not busywork) • Responsibility: At home…no fights over homework. “Don’t do it…YOU can tell Mr. P. it’s not done.” • Projects: Some typing or research at home. 98% will be in class. (Geo-towns) • If you are seeing excessive amounts of HW…good indicator that student is wasting time. • Batter-up Chart… Have to work hard to “strike out”.

  4. Subject Areas • Math: New Math series this year. Writing to explain understanding. • Times tables (cards, visual cues…one and done) • Reading: HW every day, on level. (silently and aloud) • Science/Social Studies: (hands-on Science) • Reading Record: new vocab, new understandings, “What I’ve learned, and how my understanding has improved.” • Writing: New writing series developed around the Common Core. • (a) Narrative, (b) Persuasive/opinion/argument, (c) Informational and functional / procedural

  5. Technology BYOT: Please register any and all devices that may be used. The directions are on the district web page. • Teacher approved use only. Using technology is a privilege, not a right. • If I have to confiscate a device, you will be asked to pick it up in the office. • Please no texting during class. If there is an emergency please contact the office. (Panic the child)

  6. Specials/Lunch/Recess • Special Area Classes: 2:00-2:35 • Day 1: Art • Day 2: Library • Day 3: Computer • Day 4: Phys. Ed. • Day 5: Music • Lunch: 12:20 – 12:50 • Recess: 2:40-3:00

  7. Snack Coordinator(s) • Last lunch  • Snacks from approved “snack list”: (Individual packages) goldfish, pretzels, Cheez-its, apples, clementines, apple sauce. • Different from Party list.

  8. Please sign up tonight!! • Please sign up tonight to be a party coordinator or volunteer. (5 per party) • November 11th… 1st nine weeks conference. • (11:00 AM – 7:00 PM) • Chaperones for field trips: I will send an email out with dates, times, and place asking for volunteers. Please respond for yourself only in an email if you are interested.

  9. Communication • parentiws@svsd.net Please email with student’s first and last name along with your first and last name. • Assignment Books: Look for tests, projects, daily activities, etc. Great way to communicate!! • “One of those nights!!” No questions…no judgment!! • Please don’t assume anything… Sometimes I’m last to know. Open dialogue…communicate. (preacher)
