WHY DO BAD THINGS HAPPEN?

Luke 13:4-5

A serious consideration

  • Why would a loving God allow “evil” in His world?

  • Man’s choice – Gen. 1-3

  • Bumps Are What You Climb On – Warren Eeirsbe:

  • There are values in this universe.

  • The universe is logical and orderly.

  • People are important.

  • Life is really worth living.

  • We can find answers that will help us.

A Serious Consideration

1 we are mortal

  • Matt. 5:45; Acts 14:17

  • Disease and death impact everyone

  • Luke 13:4-5 – an accident

  • Gen. 1. Natural laws impact everyone – gravity, two objects can’t occupy the same space at same time.

  • Gen. 3 – sin introduced death

  • Death isn’t just a point in time; it’s a process – Heb. 9:27; Eccl. 12:2-7

1. We are Mortal

We are foolish bad decisions

  • C.S. Lewis estimated 80% of human suffering is because of bad choices.

  • Freedom of the will – Adam and Eve.

  • Joshua 24:15

  • Frugality vs. waste; Hate leads to violence and pain; drunkenness, gossip,

  • Gal. 6:7-8

We Are Foolish – Bad Decisions

Impacted by other s decisions

  • Jonah fled God’s commands. Others were on the ship.

  • Herod caused grief trying to kill Jesus – Matt. 2:16f

  • Neighbors hungry because of alcohol and gambling.

  • School to attend. Job to accept. Every decision impacts many.

Impacted by Other’s Decisions

Vulnerable to man s inhumanity

  • Robbery, drugs, murder every day occurences.

  • Identity theft or con artists preying on elderly.

  • “War” in Iraq or terrorist bombings.

  • Why didn’t God stop Eve, or Cain, or me.

  • Free Will.

  • Eventually God will step in – Matt. 25:31ff; Heb. 10:31

Vulnerable to Man’s Inhumanity

We are righteous darkness hates light

“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (2 Tim. 3:12) see also John 16:33

Not “When will I ever get out of these troubles,” but “What will I get out of this trouble.”

Compare Job 14:1, “Man, who is born of woman is short-lived and full of turmoil.” with Psalm 119:71, “It is good for me that I was afflicted that I may learn Your statutes.”

We Are Righteous, Darkness Hates Light

Why do bad things happen

  • Corrie Ten Boom (Holocaust survivor), “When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer.”

  • “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Prov. 3:5).
