Need for Improvement Growing and ageing population • According to the 2011 census the population of the Western Trust area was 294,417 • 38,613 of these were older people aged 65+ (4,211of these were aged over 85 years) • The population is expected to grow with an average annual growth rate of 0.57% • The largest annual growth increase (5.1%) is in the 85+

  3. Increased prevalence of long term conditions • Hypertension, diabetes, obesity, asthma, mental health problems and dementia • Number of cases of dementia in NI could rise from 19,000 in 2011 to 60,000 by 2051. • In the Western Trust in 2012 there were 2717 people estimated to have dementia.

  5. Key messages • Prevention • Early diagnosis, treatment and support • Supporting carers • Supporting clients at home, in acute settings, inpatient, residential and nursing homes • Access to full range of services for special groups

  6. Vision To reform and modernise older peoples mental health services across the Western Trust area so as to provide a high quality evidence based service, responsive to user and carer needs.
