  3. Jon Postel • Founder of the “.com” domain • American computer scientist • Nick-named “God of the internet” • August 6, 1943- October 16, 1998 • Had a computer science award named after him 2

  4. “.cor” • The original main domain that was supposed to be used was a domain called “.cor” instead of “.com”. They changed it for logistical reasons

  5. “.com” vs “.net” ”.com” “.net” • Not used as much but still used in some cases. • Not as many searches generated off this compared to the “.com” domain • Most widely used domain by everyone around the world • Very difficult to get a well known word to be in front of the .com • Created by Jon Postel

  6. History of “.com” • The first .com was claimed March 15, 1985 • Manufacturer was Symbolicsinc. • Prior to this the internet was mostly used for communication 5

  7. What would the world be like without this • Most people wouldn't’t know how to look up information • Communication via internet would be a lot more difficult • A degree of difficulty would be placed on simple tasks • Computers wouldn't’t be used as widely 6
