North Carolinians and the Legislature • General Assembly • Name given to the state legislature • 1920 • Lillian Exum Clement (Buncombe County) • First women elected to serve in the General Assembly • 1968 • Henry Frye (Guilford County) • First African American elected to serve in the General Assembly

Powers of the General Assembly • Statutes • Laws that apply statewide • Decide how much money the state government will spend • Taxes • Impeach and try judges • 1871 – Governor William Holden was impeached and removed from office • 1901 • Two state supreme court judges were impeached but acquitted

Organization of the General Assembly • Bicameral • NC Senate has 50 members • NC House of Representatives has 120 members • Elections • The state is divided into 50 districts • Each district contains nearly equal population • Senate and the House of Representatives is elected to a two year term with no limit on the number of terms

  5. Organization of the General Assembly • Qualifications • NC House • 21 years old • Lived in the district for a year before the election • NC Senate • 25 years old • Citizen living in the US for at least 2 years AND in the district for one year before the election
