  2. Biographical Information • Shelley was known as the perfect poet of the Romantic Era. • He attended the finest schools, but was never able to settle into the routine of a student. Shelley spent a lot of time wandering the countryside and performing private science experiments. • Shelley was known for his strong radical political views. • After publishing the radical tract The Necessity of Atheism, Shelley and his friend Thomas Jefferson Hogg were expelled from Eton University. • Shelley’s first wife was named Harriet Westbrook. They had a rocky relationship while Westbrook questioned some of Shelley’s political ideas and felt she could not keep up with her husband. Harriet died a tragic death in 1816. • Soon after the death of his first wife, Shelley fell in love with and then married Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin. • Godwin and Shelley moved to Italy where they both wrote their finest pieces of work including “Ode to the West Wind” and “Skylark”.

  3. Ode to the West Wind • The poet associates autumn with the west wind. • Shelley creates an eerie feeling when talking about the west wind. • The poem expresses the change in his life from boyhood to manhood. • The speaker pleads with the wind to lift him “as a wave, a leaf, a cloud!” because he is like the wind itself- proud and untamable. • The new birth is winter. • Towards the end Shelley is hoping his ideals (the leaf) will take “wind” into society. • The speaker wants the wind to scatter his words among mankind.

  4. Ozymandias • This poem is about the Egyptian pharaoh, Ramses II. • He called himself the “king of kings”. • A statue was carved of him showing his attitude of being an arrogant ruler. • Ramses claimed his work to be mighty, but ironically his kingdom was nothing but ruins in the desert.

  5. Skylark • The skylark is more than an ordinary bird. It sings a song so heavenly. • It is so unique: even “rainbow clouds” do not rain as brightly as the shower of melody that pours from the skylark. • Any other music compared to the Skylark is just lacking. • When the bird sing and flies he pours out an unplanned piece of work. His song is so beautiful that it is compared to a piece of art. • It is a metaphor for a spirit. • Connected to nature. Fades into the night, but still able to follow his song.

  6. Which poem is the best??? • After reading all three of the poems, it was decided that Ozymandiaswas the most interesting. It was easy to point out Shelley’s radical political views and relate them to how he felt of the rulers of his days. Shelley did a good job describing the scene of the desert and the ruins of the statue. Not only does the poem symbolize political power, but also the pride of humanity. The reason this poem is so popular is because Shelley is able to symbolize what is happening politically at that time and disguising it so it is not so forward for his readers.
