  1. Aarti is said to have descended from the Vedic concept of fire rituals. Aarti is performed and sung to develop the highest love for God. "Aa" means "towards or to", and "rati" means "right or virtue" in Sanskrit.

  2. What is Aarti? • It is a ceremony which offers respect and welcomes Maharaj. • It is a ritual involving circulation of Divas infront of God’s image. • Aarti is made up of the 5 elements known as the “PanchBhoot”

  3. What are the “PanchBhoot?” • Earth (Pruthvi) • Water (Jal) • Light (Tej) • Wind (Vaayu) • Aakash (Space)

  4. There are 5 types of Aarti which are done at different times. • Mangala - Performed before sunrise to wake Maharaj • Shangaar - Performed after sunrise for dressing Maharaj • Rajbhog - Performed at noon for offering food to Maharaj • Shandhya - Performed in the evening after daily activities • Shayan - Performed after sunset when preparing Maharaj for bed.

  5. How is Aarti done? Starting from the feet, you must work your way up. In total you should do 14 circles in a clockwise direction. • 4 at His feet • 2 at His waist • 1 at His face • 7 round His whole body

  6. All 5 Aarti’s are can only be done at ShikharBhandMandirs. In Dev Mandirs (HariMandirs) only 2 Aartis are done, One in the Morning and one in the evening. 2.4 million Devtas are present when Aarti takes place, so Aarti is given to them first, and we should do DandvatPranam of them after Aarti because they are not normally present.

  7. Jay Sadguru Swami Aarti was 1st sung in Karayani by Muktanand Swami in 1804 when he realized that Lord Swaminarayan is Himself the Creator PurnaPurushottam Bhagwan. Muktanand Swami sung this Aarti to express his devotion to Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
