  1. Customary Measurement Converting between units: Length, Weight, Capacity

  2. Length • In the customary system, length is measured in inches, feet, yards, and miles. • The length of a leaf would be measured in inches. • The trunk of a tree would be measured in feet. • The height of the entire tree might be measured in yards. • The distance from here to Fort Worth would be measured in miles.

  3. Customary Measurement Length 12 inches = 1 foot 3 feet = 1 yard 5,280 feet = 1 mile Do you know?? 36 _______ inches = 1 yard 1,760 _______ yards = 1 mile

  4. If you are going from smaller units to larger units, you will need less. So, you would DIVIDE by the conversion factor . Measurements of Length 12 in = 1 ft 3 ft = 1 yard 5,280 ft = 1 mile Let’s try some: 48 in = ___ ft 64 in = ___ ft ____ in 18 ft = _____ yd 10,560 ft = ____ miles

  5. If you are going from larger units to smaller units, you will need more of them. So, you would MULTIPLY by the conversion factor Measurements of Length 12 in = 1 ft 3 ft = 1 yard 5,280 ft = 1 mile Let’s Try A Few: 13 feet = ___ inches 3 miles = _______ ft. 7 yards = _______ ft

  6. More Practice • 3.5 ft = ___ in • 65 inches = _____ ft • 4 yds. 1 ft = ______ ft

  7. How might this look on STAAR? Juan measured the distance from the corner of his house to the corner of his friend’s house. it was a distance of 384 feet. How many yards was Juan’s house from his friend’s house? A 1,152 yards B 387 yards C 128 yards D 32 yards
