  2. Handball • Handball was developed in Denmark, Sweden and Germany. Originally played outdoors, the sport first appeared at the Olympic Games in 1936. The modern indoor version made its Olympic debut at Munich 1972. • place: Copper Box  • Dates: Saturday 28 July – Sunday 12 Augustevents: 2Athletes: 336 (168 men, 168 women)

Basketball • Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr James Naismith, a Canadian physical education teacher. • place: Basketball Arena –North Greenwich Arena Dates: Saturday 28 July – Sunday 12 Augustevents: 2Athletes: 288 (144 men, 144 women). • Basketball is played by two teams of five players Points are scored by shooting into the basket. • The first game, which took place in December 1891, dr James Naismith used fruits baskets for goals.
