Put On Your Thinking Caps!
  • Imagine a compact car and a large truck traveling with the same velocity. The drivers of both vehicles put on the breaks at the same time. Which vehicle will stop first?
lets talk momentum
Lets Talk Momentum!
  • Momentum: the product of the mass and velocity of an object.
  • The momentum of an object depends on the object’s mass and and velocity.
  • The more momentum an object has, the harder it is to stop the object or change its direction.
calculating momentum
Calculating Momentum
  • Momentum (p) can be calculated with the following equation:
  • P= m x v
  • Mass (m)
  • Velocity (v)
  • The units of momentum are kilograms (kg) multiplied by meters per second (m/s):
  • Kg x m/s
lets try a few
Lets Try a Few!
  • What is the momentum of an ostrich with a mass of 120kg that runs with a velocity of 16 m/s north?
  • Step 1: Write the equation for momentum:

p = m x v

Step 2: Replace m and v with the values given in the problem, and solve.

P = 120kg x 16 m/s north

P = 1,9200

Try This One On Your Own!
  • You have 3 minutes to figure out the problem
  • What is the momentum of a 6kg bowling ball that is moving at 10 m/s down the alley toward the pins?
the law of conservation of momentum
The Law of Conservation of Momentum
  • The law of conservation of momentum states: any time objects collide, the total amount of momentum stays the same.
the laws
The Laws!
  • Objects can collide and stick together after a collision: for example, foot ball player to foot ball player.
  • In some collisions objects bounce off each other; for example, bowling ball to pins.
newton s 3 rd law
Newton’s 3rd Law
  • Conservation of momentum can be explained by Newton’s third law of motion.
  • Action/Reaction
  • The reaction force was the equal but opposite force exerted by the billiard ball on the cue ball. The action force made the billiard ball start moving, and the reaction force made the cue ball stop moving.
