Breakout Session One: “From Punitive to Instructive: Changing the Conversation on Academic Integrity” • Main Points: • The role of professional development is huge: we should embrace a culture of integrity from Day One in each/every course, irrespective of delivery modality • Student responsibility can be handled by way of the student government forming an “Integrity Council” (e.g., a part of ASCR) • This was a most enlightening breakout. Breakout Session Two: “Distance Education IS Different: Issues with Academic Integrity in Distance Education (DE) Modalities” • Main Points: • Six million students in U.S. took online classes (excluding MOOCs) in 2012. • Recent initiatives by the CSU and UC systems make it clear that DE is expanding • HEOA requires accreditors to require institutions “to have processes through which the institution establishes that the student who registers in a DE course or program is the same student who participates in and completes the program and receives the academic credit.” • Examples of processes/practices of Authentication: • An LMS adopted by the college and used by all faculty; • Proctored assessment(s); • LMS log-in statement discussing Student Code of Conduct, etc.

  5. Breakout Session Three: “Just Leave us Alone Already! ADTs and SB 440: Will the Fun Ever End?” • Main Points: • Too numerous to mention, but points aligned with discussions and activities underway at CR • Much discussion about AoE (Area of Emphasis) degrees; included the clarification that local AoE degrees have nothing to do with SB440 AoE degrees

Breakout Session Four: “Strengthening Ties with Instruction and Student Services” • Main Points: • Ramifications of SB1456 – Student Success Act, 2012 • Should we as a local Senate strengthen the roles of non-teaching faculty as a result? Because of the compelling nature of these discussions at this breakout session, I will introduce into the Senate Executive Committee, to be followed by a discussion at the full Senate, a potential rewrite of the Senate bylaws to ensure, if at all possible, that the Senate Executive Committee includes a non-teaching faculty member serving within Student Support Services (e.g., a counselor)

Breakout Session Five: “Championing Quality: Increasing the Number of Full-time Faculty” • Main Points: • FON number calculations established in 1988; seem inherently inequitable today • Non-credit faculty not included in the FON • System-wide, the FT faculty in CCC’s is slowly decreasing: • 2010: 58%; 2011: 57%; 2012: 57%; 2013: 56% • Presenters argued persuasively that to ensure higher levels of quality within programs, districts need to reverse the trend of reducing FT / increasing PT faculty
