  1. EVALUATION Our film is about a detective who is investigating a murder similar to the one of his sister and is looking around for clues and trying to figure out how it happened and who was behind it. It starts of with the detective walking around the crime scene observing the area for any clues leading to the murder and also trying to deal with the flashbacks he keeps getting from his sister’s death. The detective is keen on using what ever he can to solve the murder because he believes that both murders are linked together so he thinks that solving this murder he will put his mind at rest and the flashbacks that haunt him will stop. Our film is a Psychological/Crime thriller and we spent our time trying to make it obvious for the viewers in our sequence by creating a tensed atmosphere which involves a fully attired detective and a mystery full storyline. I can’t really think of a film to compare our sequence with but I would say it has the same essence of thriller as Seven but without the blood and violence. We chose Sorrow as our title because the meaning of it reflects the detective’s feelings towards the whole situation in the storyline. We also chose this title because it’s simple and straight forward for a Psychological/Crime thriller and people who know the meaning of the word will likely guess what the main character will be like in the film.

  2. Since our film is a Psychological/Crime thriller we tried to portray the mix of the two genre’s by introducing our main character (The Detective) in an intuitive way so that the audience quickly assume its a film to do with crime, although we didn’t portray the psychological side as much in the opening sequence we tried to add more emotion and tried to make the detective seem more confused and suspicious about the murder. The main theme of the film is murder and the main twist is the mystery of who was the murderer and is he or she linked to the other similar murders that occurred in the recent years. We tried to represent the detective as an old school type of detective with the jacket and hat like Detective Lt. William Somerset in Seven. The Detective is meant to be in his late 40’s but isn’t ready to retire until he solves this case. In our film he is meant to be one of the most prestigious detective in the cooperation he works for so they see him as the only person who can solve this case and he is more than prepared to solve it because he is still haunted by the murder of his sister. We don’t introduce the killer in the sequence because that would ruin the whole idea of a psychological thriller but instead we try to hint the killers presents with some hidden camera shot like when the detective is at the murder s Psychological /Crime Thriller

  3. Costume & Character For the detectives costume I wore an old brown leather jacket and black trousers which made my character “the detective” look much older and wiser and its also a stereotypical look for an old detective. We tried to portray the detective as a serious and determined man who had been haunted by his sister’s death so we tried to make sure he was a slight bit emotional about the whole situation and at the same time determined to get to the bottom of it. In the opening sequence you mainly see two character’s which are me as the Detective and Ella as the Murder victim. Our Location is at the Preston Rockery, We mainly chose this location because we thought it was a perfect area for our opening sequence because it’s an isolated area and not many people go there which makes it an ideal place for filming. We also chose the location because of its properties like dark hidden areas, shadows, and small bridges which meant we would have access to different angles and heights for our camera shots. Although they were some minor down sides to the location like, Low lighting, Bad weather and cold wind. We still tried to use the time and space we had to film as much footage as we could so when it came to editing we would have more recorded footage to work with. For props we had planned to use some crime tape but the company we ordered the tape from sent the wrong one and we didn’t have enough time to buy from another shop.

  4. Throughout the sequence you don’t here much diegetic sound and we done this on purpose because we wanted the environment to seem more isolated and also wanted the non diegetic music to be the main source for building a tensed atmosphere. The main diegetic sounds you here in the sequence are the detective’s foot steps and the detective’s camera when he takes pictures of the dead body. You also get some odd sounds in the back ground of cars, trains and animals which are good because they also create an unsettled feeling as if he is surrounded by something. I made the music for our short sequence using a music production software called fruity loops 9.Before I started making the music I had a ruff idea of what I wanted to achieve by the end of the day which was to create music that matched well with our sequence and that also had enough properties to enhance the tensed atmosphere in our opening sequence. It took me about 30 minutes to finish it. I brought the music into college to review it with my group to see if they approved it and they did which made it a lot easier for me because it meant that we could review it with the whole class and get some feedback. After going through the feedback we received some people mentioned that the music had like a dance beat drop like feeling to it so I then went home to edit the music to make it more suitable for our sequence.

  5. Lighting/Colour The lighting in our location was quite bright in some areas and because of the huge trees surrounding the area you could see a lot of shadows and dark section. We thought would be perfect for filming our sequence. The location was also very colourful with lots of flowers and trees surrounding the areas and the sun also contributed in bringing out the bright colours in our location. We mainly wanted to fit in this colourful scene in our sequence because it showed the audience that even in a colourful and friendly place you can still find something dark and evil and sending out this message would also alert the viewers that anything can happen in a scene like this because you can’t predict what will happen next. Camera Shots And Editing Techniques Our main objective was to use low angle shots on the detective to make him look big and almighty. It was a challenge to get the perfect shots that we needed to keep a good sense of continuity, so we decided to do some long shots as well so when the detective performed actions like getting out his notepad and pen, viewers would clearly see what the detective was doing and how he was doing it. We also tried to make sure we shot our sequence without breaking the 180 degree rule. Most of the shots we used were pretty basic because we wanted to make the sequence simple but at the same time sophisticated by using a wide range of shot sizes to introduce both the location and the characters. Editing was pretty straight forward because we knew exactly how we wanted to lay each shot out so we reviewed all of our recorded footage and captured the shots that we needed for our editing process. We used a professional video software called adobe premier to edit our footage.

  6. After sometime editing, Some of the college staff reviewed our edited opening sequence and also gave us some feedback on how we could improve it and make it more of an opening sequence than the actual start of the movie. This opened our eyes a bit more and allowed us to rethink about how we had arranged our clips and how we could improve it. With some suggestions from the media staff we started rearranging our clips right away and added some still images of roses similar to the ones in our sequence to create an animation of a rose dying out. This proved very useful because it gave us more time in the frames to add some tittles through the clip of the opening sequence. Adobe Premier

  7. SORROW Definition of Sorrow An emotion of great sadness associated with loss or bereavement; "he tried to express his sorrow at her loss" sadness associated with some wrong done or some disappointment; "he drank to drown his sorrows"; "he wrote a note expressing his regret"; "to his rue, the error cost him the game“. Info gathered from this link http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&defl=en&q=define:sorrow&sa=X&ei=6KE3TbfHMt-qhAfK2MSeAw&ved=0CBwQkAE We chose “Sorrow” as our title because its simple and its meaning reflects the detectives feelings towards the murder of his young sister and also reflects how he feels about the whole situation he is in now. Its been 5 years since his sister was murdered and still no one has found the murderer or even Tried to follow through the investigation properly Because of lack of evidence. All they managed to Find was the rose that was left in her hand by the Murderer which was also similar to the roses that Were left in more recent murder victims which is Why the detective believes that if he solves this Case he can finally retire and put his mind at rest

  8. In the film the detective is a middle aged British man who was abandoned by his wife after their son died at birth 7 years ago. He has been working as a full time detective for 15 years and is well known for solving some of the biggest crime investigation in the history of his time in the job. When he was abandoned by his wife he started living with his sister because she was worried about his mental state and wanted to help him keep his life on track .One night she went out to meet a mysterious man she had met on an internet dating site and that's when she was murdered. Since then the detective has been haunted by his sister’s death and felt that the only way he could honour her death was to make sure that the murderer was brought down to justice. In his mind he promised himself and her that he wouldn’t rest until everything was put right. The detective is typical for a psychological crime thriller because his job involves having to deal with puzzled crimes and he has to put his own life at risk to fit everything together to solve a case. We wanted to present the detective as an old fashioned type of guy who has very high morale and believes in doing things his own way. The costume was very helpful in creating our ideal detective because in the present day you wouldn’t see a detective with this of kind attire. Through the film we wanted the Detective to seem distracted most of the time by The visions in his head to give the audience the impression that he is haunted by something and he is trying to battle it in his mind and in reality. The detective in our sequence is a bit like Detective Lt. William Somerset from the Crime/thriller Seven. Having been In the detective job for a while he has the knowledge and skill he needs to solve a difficult case. But the main difference is that our Detective works alone and is very independent when it comes to solving a major cases. Detective Lt. William Somerset

  9. Distribution If our film was to be released, it would most likely be distributed by New Line Cinema because they have such great titles like A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Number 23 and Se7en which include some aspects that we have in our film. Although the film is high budget I still think people who like psychological crime thrillers would still enjoy it because it will have the same essence of psychological mind games and action to satisfy the viewers. Sometimes the most successful or highly rated movies can be made on a low budget e.g. ‘Brick’ which was very successful considering they only had a budget of $475,000 (estimated) and managed to reel in  $2,060,589.The film Brick also managed 9 wins & 11 nomination which is pretty impressive for a movie created on such a low budget. Advertising The film would more likely appeal to male adults aged from 20-40 because the detective plays a powerful role which he goes through a phase of misconception and has to rely on his instincts to solve the murder case. The main reason why it wouldn’t appeal to women as much as it would appeal to men is the fact that women are meant to be the victim in the film and the detective is a much stronger character. We aim to reach out to our target audience by using traditional methods of advertising like Billboards, Magazines, Newspapers and most of all word of mouth because that way we can also cover other ways of advertisement like social networking sites and use the viewers to spread the word for us. What I mostly like about this type advertisement is that its basically free and can sometimes prove most effective.

  10. New Line Cinema These are some of the great tittles Distributed by Newline Cinema.

  11. Our Niche Audience will be people who have an interest in psychological thriller movies mainly because its the main genre of our film and that group of audience are likely to appreciate the essence of the genre more than the rest of audience. We aim to appeal to our niche audience by casting a huge actor like Anthony Hopkins to play a mysterious character in the film. With his success in the thriller genre, it might also help extend the audience range because most of his fans might want to watch the film because he will be in it. Merchandise We plan on selling hooded jumpers and t-shirts with the title 'Sorrow’ and red roses printed on them. We also plan to Market a range of large posters of the film and characters.

  12. Age Classification Our film will be have a 15+ classification mainly because it will involve some disturbing scenes with dead bodies and will also involve bad language and minor violence. We plan to set up a huge competition before the film release date for people to have a chance to win 3 tickets for the premier and also meet the stars. The Completion will be about luck. We will hide secret number on each of our merchandise and for you to win you need to have bought an item with the identical numbers to the one we will release at a later date. Competition

  13. Looking back at the preliminary I learnt allot about how to apply simple things like the rules of third and the 180 degree rule to make my footage look more professional. I also learnt about how to use facial expression and body language to portray a character and also learnt about different ways you can film to keep your footage at a high standard. In the process of editing I also learnt a few things about the software we were using called adobe premier. Being in a group made things allot easier because it meant we could share ideas and review each others work to make sure it was at a good standard. As a group we made decisions together and used each lesson to add to our blog post and give each other feedback on each individual task. Overall I learnt allot about the techniques that are involved in filming and ways you can make them most effective.
