  7. Principle of the Web • The Web uses individual Web pages usually combined to make up Web sites. • Web pages are (mostly) written in HTML. • HTML tells the Web browser how to display the page and its elements. • Web pages are stored in Web servers and their copies are sent on demand to Web browsers. 3. 10. 2013

  8. Key concepts of the Web • Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) on the client/server communication model • Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) • Uniform Resource Locator (URL) • Common Gateway Interface (CGI) 3. 10. 2013

  9. Principle of the communication within the Web system 3. 10. 2013

  10. Web server & Web browser • Web server – program that, using client/server model and the HTTP, servers the files that form Web pages to Web users • Most popular Web servers are Apache, and Microsoft’s Internet Information System (IIS) • Web browser – an application program that provides a way to look at and interact with all the information on the WWW 3. 10. 2013

  11. The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) • CGI is an standard way for a Web server to pass a Web client’s request to an application program and receive data back to forward to the user. • When user fills out a form on a Web page and sends it, the input usually needs to be processed. • The Web server passes the form information to an application program that processes the data and may send back some message. 3. 10. 2013

  12. Server-side & Client-side scripts • Server-side • Requests from users are interpreted by server • The page is sent in final form • PHP, ASP • Client-side • User requests are processed in browser • The page could be influenced by browser settings • Scripts are potentially dangerous for computer • JavaScript, Flash, Java 3. 10. 2013

  13. Searching services on the Web • deals with navigation through the Web space • The Web searcher (Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Seznam) interacts with a user which enters the keywords determining the subject of his/her interest. • The searcher seeks in its databases and then generates the list of the links to wanted information. 3. 10. 2013
