Slides – Some “history & perspective” • __________________ 35 mm slides (or overhead transparencies) challenges: a) project ‘advance’ working b) jammed slides c) “advanced” time required 1) get good pictures 2) get good graphs/charts 3) get film processed 4) editing limited • ______ PowerPoint Few conferences offered PC-video projector Not reliable/compatible (CD vs. 3 ½ floppy vs. ???)

Current PowerPoint • More conformity (except maybe for video clips)…most versions of PowerPoint accepted • Better chance of “everything” working • Still issues with “________” and “__________” • Less _________, more last-minute “throwing together” of slide sets • Over use of whistles and bells

  4. “Guidelines… did you say Guidelines?” • Nothing “hard and fast” --- at least anything that will get you off the program…in advance • Avoid over doing it (in a variety of ways….color, animation, contrast, backgrounds, too many slides, etc.) • Font _____ AND ______ are critical !!!!!! • Consider your audience AND consider you as the speaker!!! • Bottomline…don’t be ______________ …any slide. If it isn’t ‘quality’ then don’t include it OR modify it BEFORE the presentation !!!!

  10. Animation….sequencing • Limit number of colors (<3) • Do not over- animate…keep it simple • “synchronize” with verbal comments

Title Slides (i.e., first slide) • Large font size • Really, really, really: _________________ only …except for maybe a scientific name • Less is often better • Avoid any animation/mouse-click “add-ons”: a) don’t know when ‘ready’ to launch b) want audience to get full attention “now”… not with snippets that show up because you are just getting use to the clicker/pointer/pg-down button, etc. • Keep in mind: this is _____ thing audience sees!
