  1. Martin and the Lutherans present: The English Reformation

  2. Backstory English reformation as a result of several factors: the printer and Luther’s ideas…both spread ideas and chaos everywhere and put mainland Europe through hell. Other slightly less important factors: rise of nationalism and capitalism, desire to break away from church, etc Also worth noting: this reformation was not a combination of PSE reasons, but was almost purely political. The Brits really don’t like the church

  3. Brits and the Church The English had a long history of resistance to the Papal Authority. William of Ockham(1285-1349) pointed to Popes’ abuse of power John Wycliffe (1329-84) taught that scripture had more authority than the pope William Tyndale (1492-1536) translated Bible into an English translation seemingly favoring the Protestant cause over the objection of English bishops

  4. Seven stages of reform Like grief, the English reformation occurred in 7 stages. 1. 1509-47: Reformation under Henry VIII 2. 1547-53: continuation of reform under Edward 3.1553-58: resurgence of Catholicism under Mary (VIII’s daughter) 4. 1558-1603: Elizabethan settlement 5. 1603-25: High Anglicanism under Stuarts 6. 1625-60: Puritan Revolution 7. 1660-68: Stuart reformation (middle ground btwncath and prot

  5. Stage 1 VIII marries Catherine of Aragon. Doesn’t get a son. Wants a divorce. Catherine doesn’t want a divorce and appeals to her cousin Charles V, who pressures pope into denying VIII’s request. (Cardinal Wolsey is VIII’s envoy to pope. Fails to secure divorce). Henry gets angry, but doesn’t break from church recklessly. 1530: Gets it done by saying clergy violated statute of praemunire, which was designed to protect England from papal power. 1532: clergy presents VIII with “submission of the Clergy” which makes VIII head of English Church. 1533-4, parliament passes “Act of restraint of Annates, “Restraint of appeals”, and “act of supremacy” which effectively established Anglican church. English church is not longer part of catholic church and VIII gets his divorce.

  6. Stage 2 After Henry dies, his son Edward becomes king at age 10. Duke of Somerset rules as regent. This becomes period of changes that solidify Anglican Church. Book of Common Prayer is published and provides an English-language liturgy. Broadly works Sacrament to appeal to both Catholics and protestants. Communion is made available to laity and clergy, and images are removed from churches. Clergy is allowed to marry.

  7. Stage 3 1553: Edward dies. Half-sister Mary Tudor takes over. She tried brining back Catholisicm. By 1554 England is Catholic. She burns people, mainly Thomas Cranmer (1556). Her reign sees Catholic humanists in England. Did I mention the burnings? 280 people burned publicly. She’s where the term Bloody Mary originates.

  8. Stage 4 Elizabeth I’s reign begins in 1558. Moderate who didn’t really seek to bring back Protestantism. Under her rule Anglicanism returns to England. Remember the Anglicans killed by catholics in England during Mary’s reign? Payback time!!!

  9. Stages 5, 6, 7 England and Scotland united by James V and Mary I’s marriage. Protestant preachers arrive in Scotland. After Mary Tudor dies, Mary Stuart claims to be Queen of England. Protestant nobles of Scotland, in anticipation of catholic/protestant England, decide to form a church and ask John Knox for help. Knox is anti-Catholic, and plans to derail Catholicism in England my mocking Female catholic queen (First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women) in 1558. Alienates himself from Protestant Elizabeth when she becomes queen of England. Knox really doesn’t like women. When Scots ask Mary Stuart (in France) to return to Scotland, he makes life hell for her. Calls her Jezebel and claims she’s bringing back Catholicism. Knox wants to pillage Despoiled catholic churches and use the money to educate the poors.

  10. Stage 7: But that head game tho Mary really screws up. Though she does her best not to antagonize Protestant Scotland, she does a lot of suspicious stuff, including blowing up her husband Henry Darnley after he murders David Riccio, with whom Mary had an affair. Mary is forced to abdicate throne. Is imprisoned in Scotland, but escapes to England, where Elizabeth offers her “refuge”. While there, Mary plans to assassinate Elizabeth and take control of England. She’s found out and beheaded in 1587. Last Catholic person in England in line for the throne is dead. Protestantism wins in England!
