  2. Knowing What’s Been Done. What does the knowledge base say about the approach you are proposing to do? What have others done that is related? What has worked previously? What have been the problems/challenges?

  3. Fatal Flaw: Not sourcing your effort.“Trust us, we know what we’re doing.” Give background information; cite literature that demonstrate that you are aware of similar efforts/prior work. References indicate the PI’s depth of knowledge and awareness of the work of others in the field. The use of references in the proposal convinces the reviewers that the PIs have conducted appropriate research and are aware of similar projects at other institutions.
