Taxation Leads to Probs. • 1890 US passed the McKinley Tarriff Act that taxed goods (sugar) coming from outside the US • US merchants in HI began losing $, so asked US to annex (or add) HI to the US • HI ruler Queen Liliuokalanitried to stop • US merchants responded by gathering group to overthrow queen

  4. HI Added to US • After queen removed, American plantation owner Sanford B. Dole named president • Dole asked US to annex HI • 1898 HI became part of US
