  3. THE EVENTS CONNECTED WITH THE CLOSE OF PROBATION The events connected with the close of probation and the work of preparation for the time of trouble, are clearly presented. But multitudes have no more understanding of these important truths than if they had never been revealed. {Great Controversy, p. 594}

  4. WHAT IS THE “TIME OF THE END”? The prophecies present a succession of events leading down to the opening of the judgment. This is especially true of the book of Daniel. But that part of his prophecy which related to the last days, Daniel was bidden to close up and seal "to the time of the end." … The "man of sin," which is also styled "the mystery of iniquity," "the son of perdition," and "that wicked," represents the papacy, which, as foretold in prophecy, was to maintain its supremacy for 1260 years. This period ended in 1798.{Great Controversy, p. 356}

  5. WHO WAS THE KING OF THE SOUTH IN 1798? The period when the two witnesses were to prophesy clothed in sackcloth, ended in 1798. As they were approaching the termination of their work in obscurity, war was to be made upon them by the power represented as "the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit." In many of the nations of Europe the powers that ruled in church and state had for centuries been controlled by Satan through the medium of the papacy. But here is brought to view a new manifestation of satanic power…

Of all nations presented in Bible history, Egypt most boldly denied the existence of the living God and resisted His commands. No monarch ever ventured upon more open and highhanded rebellion against the authority of Heaven than did the king of Egypt. This is atheism, and the nation represented by Egypt would give voice to a similar denial of the claims of the living God and would manifest a like spirit of unbelief and defiance. "The great city" is also compared, "spiritually," to Sodom. The corruption of Sodom in breaking the law of God was especially manifested in licentiousness. This compromise between paganism and Christianity resulted in the development of "the man of sin" foretold in prophecy as opposing and exalting himself above God.   10. 1798 In 1798 French armies under General Louis AlexandreBerthier marched on Rome, which had been declared a republic by Roman revolutionaries in league with the French, and demanded that Pius renounce his temporal sovereignty. At his refusal the pope was taken prisoner and held first at Siena and ultimately at Valence, France, where he died. {Encarta Encyclopedia, 2002.}

  13. Jacobins: Political club of the French Revolution. In 1789 Breton members of the States-General met in a Dominican (French: ‘Jacobin’) monastery to form the Jacobin Club. By 1791, it had branches throughout France. By 1792, Robespierre had seized control of the Jacobins and the club adopted more radical policies. In 1793, they engineered the expulsion of the Girondins and the club became an instrument of the Reign of Terror. It collapsed after Robespierre's downfall in 1794. {World Encyclopedia, 2005}

  15. Marx, Karl Heinrich (1818–83) German social philosopher, political theorist, and founder (with Friedrich Engels) of international communism. He produced his own philosophical approach of dialectical materialism. He proclaimed that religion was “the opium of the people” and in (1845–46), written with Engels, described the “inevitable laws” of history.   16. THE BOLSHEVIK REVOLUTION The modern form of Communism began to develop with the split (1903) within the Russian Social Democratic Labor party into factions of Bolshevism and Menshevism. The more radical wing, the Bolsheviks, were led by Lenin and advocated immediate and violent revolution to bring about the downfall of capitalism and the establishment of an international socialist state. The triumph of the Bolsheviks in the Russian Revolution of 1917 gave them the leadership in socialist action.   17. Lenin, Vladimir Ilyich (1870–1924) Russian revolutionary. He evolved a revolutionary doctrine, based principally on Marxism, in which he emphasized the need for a vanguard party to lead the revolution. In 1900, Lenin went abroad and founded what became the Bolsheviks(1903). After the first part of the Russian Revolution of 1917, he returned to Russia. He denounced the liberal republican government of Kerensky and demanded armed revolt.
