  1. Let’s see what you forgot…I mean remember… Who can name the dictators that we studied before the break? Who can tell me what countries they controlled? Who can tell me what types of governments these countries had?

  2. Objectives Identify reasons for U.S. involvement in World War II, including the growth of dictatorships and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Identify and explain causes and effects of World War II. Specifically the rise of Nazism/Fascism in Germany, Italy, and Japan and the rise of communism in the Soviet Union. Use sequencing and map skills to interpret information.

  3. The Road to World War II

  4. Why did the U.S. want to remain neutral? Memories of WWI The Great Depression It’s Europe’s Problem Hoped the war would not reach us

  5. What happens in the PAST doesn’t stay in the PAST! • The Treaty of Versailles • The League of Nations • The Great Depression • Russian Revolution

  6. January 1933: Hitler became Chancellor of Germany

  7. Nazi Creed After reading the creed, think about how Hitler applied these beliefs to actual actions leading up to and during World War II. Share you thoughts with your partner or group. Be prepared to give examples to the class.

  8. Hitler soon ordered a program of rearming Germany Hitler visits a factory and is enthusiastically greeted. Many Germans were grateful for jobs after the misery of he depression years.

  9. March 1936: German troops marched into the Rhineland The Rhineland was a region of Germany that was ‘demilitarised’ after the Treaty of Versailles. Germany was not allowed to have troops in the region. Hitler’s actions showed how he was willing to directly challenge the treaty.

  10. March 12th, 1938: Nazi Germany marches into Austria Again, this went against the terms of the Treaty of Versailles which banned Germany from uniting with Austria. However, the arrival of German troops was met with great enthusiasm by many Austrian people.

  11. September 30, 1938Signing of the Munich Agreement • 3 million Germans lived in Sudentenland (region of Czechoslovakia • Hitler: “Last territorial demand” • Chamberlain: “Peace in our Time”

  12. Churchill’s Take on the Munich Agreement • Appeasement- giving up principles to pacify an aggressor • “Britain and France had to choose between war and dishonor. They chose dishoner. They will have war.”

  13. ????? In what ways did Hitler ignore the Treaty of Versailles? At what stage do you think other countries should have attempted to stop Hitler by using force? Why do you think they did not? How was Hitler able to take over Western Europe so quickly?

  14. March 1939: Germany invaded Czechoslovakia Hopes that Sudetenland would be the last Nazi conquest were ill founded. However, on March 15th 1939, troops invaded the remainder of Czechoslovakia. This was the first aggressive step that suggested that a war in Europe would soon begin.

  15. August 1939: Germany and Russia signed a non-aggression pact Hitler and Stalin (the Russian leader) signed a ‘non-aggression pact’. They promised that neither country would attack the other in the event of war. As part of the deal, Hitler promised Stalin part of Poland, which he planned to invade soon. This photo shows the Russian foreign minister signing the pact, whilst Stalin stands smiling in the background

  16. Stalin Hitler The non-aggression pact was surprising. Hitler and Stalin were seen as natural enemies. When Hitler talked of taking over new land for Germany, many thought that he meant Russia. Hitler also hated Communism, the form of government in Russia

  17. September 1939: Germany invaded Poland But, the pact allowed Germany to march into Poland without fear of a two front war. On September 1st 1939, Germany invaded Poland using the blitzkrieg strategy. September 3rd, 1939 Britain & France declare war on Germany. German troops marching into Warsaw, the capital of Poland.

  18. April 9th, 1940: Surprise Invasion of Denmark & Norway • Protect them from “freedom & independence” • Strategic: Future attack of Great Britain • http://historicalresources.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/norway.jpg

  20. By June 1940, France had surrendered to the Germans Hitler gave France his terms for their surrender. Charles de Gaulle fled to England. Britain now stood alone as the last remaining enemy of Hitler’s Germany in Western Europe. Adolf Hitler tours Paris after his successful invasion.

  21. September 1940 Summer of 1940: Months of air attacks in Britain. On September 15, 1940, 185 German planes were shot down by Britain.

  22. Operation Barbarossa, June 1941 But in May, 1941, Hitler ordered a change of tactics. He decided to halt the bombing of Britain and launch an attack against Russia. He betrayed Stalin and ignored the promises he had made. This was a bold move that would prove to be an important turning point in the War.

  23. ????? In what ways did Hitler ignore the Treaty of Versailles? At what stage do you think other countries should have attempted to stop Hitler by using force? Why do you think they did not? How was Hitler able to take over Western Europe so quickly? Why did he create problems for the Germany army by deciding to invade Russia?

  24. Why did the U.S. want to remain neutral? Memories of WWI The Great Depression It’s Europe’s Problem Hoped the war would not reach us

  25. Goal: Be able to discuss the domestic & international leadership of FDR during WWII including relations with our allies. After the video on FDR, find a partner and read pages 229-232 in the Jarrett book. Then answer the following questions on your own paper. Be prepared to discuss. Papers will be turned at the end of the period. Based on the video & your reading, do you believe FDR agreed with the American policy of Isolationism? Give 3 examples to support your response. Summarize the series of events that led to the attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor. Should the U.S. have been surprised by this attack or not? Justify your answer.
