Poems • In Shakespeare's life he has written many plays, but in the world of writing, poems are far more important to a writers reputation. • “Like his plays, Shakespeare’s poems are full of passages that remain embedded in our popular culture. Sonnet 116 (‘Let me not to the marriage of true minds’) is a fixture of wedding ceremonies”

  3. Sonnets • It’s not about the beauty and power of the sonnet but story that’s within it • 154 sonnets were published in 1609 • 10 syllables per line • “The Dark Lady- 28 sonnets to or about a woman who is presented as dark and treacherous and with whom the poet is sexually obsessed.”

  4. Plays • Traditionally divided into three categories:-Comedies-Histories-Tragedies • There were 39 plays • “The Tempest- puts romance on the stage. He gives us a magician, a monster, a grief-stricken king, a wise old councilor and two beautiful princesses.”

  5. Works You Might Know • Romeo and Juliet • Hamlet • Macbeth • Midsummer’s Night Dream • All’s Well That Ends Well • Julius Caesar

Plays In Today’s Society • Our modern life and culture is filled with the words of William Shakespeare. • Hamlet’s “To be or not to be”. • There are 38 plays still existing today, gathered in Folios and without these Folios, the plays would be lost. • His words of wisdom are still popular and wise themes in today’s society.

  7. Understanding Shakespeare • The language is highly compressed and highly structured • Some of the terms describe images • Repays close attention to basic linguistic elements • Notes on what words mean are usually placed beside the original text.

  8. Understanding Shakespeare • Most people today have a hard time understanding some of his work. • In order to be able to understand some of his readings, the reader must get use to unusual sentence structure. • Also they must be able to understand and comprehend different word play.

  9. Poems • Shakespeare wrote two of his longest poems during a time of forced unemployment in 1592-94, they were eventually published in 1593-94. • Some of Shakespeare’s poems can be found within his plays. • His poems still apply to popular themes present in our day to day culture
