  1. Lyrical By Kelsey Jackson

  2. Definition: lyr·i·cal   (lĭr'ĭ-kəl)    -adj.   • Very poetic or musical • Utilizes figurative language, rhythm and diction

  3. Etymology: • 1581 • from Latin lyricus "of or for the lyre” • from Greek lyrikos "singing to the lyre"

  4. 1st Example in Writing: • “Maybe the moon may learn, Tired of that courtly fashion, A new dance turn. Minnaloushe creeps through the grass From moonlit place to place, The sacred moon overhead Has taken a new phase. Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils Will pass from change to change, And that from round to crescent, From crescent to round they range?” Yeats, William Butler. “The Cat and the Moon."Poetry Archive. 1 December 2009.<http://www.poetry- archive.com/y/the_ cat_and_the_moon.html>.

  5. 2nd Example in Writing: • “The last clear definite function of man—muscles aching to work, minds aching to create beyond the single need—this is man. To build a wall, to build a house, a dam, and in the wall and house and dam to put something of Manself, and to Manself take back something of the wall, the house the dam; to take hard muscles from the lifting, to take the clear lines and form from conceiving. For man, unlike any other thing organic or inorganic in the universe, grows beyond his work, walks up the stairs of his concepts, emerges ahead of his accomplishments.” Steinbeck, John. The Grapes of Wrath. New York: Viking Publishers, 1939.

  6. 3rd Example in Writing: Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same” Frost, Robert. “The Road Not Taken." The Academy of American Poets. 1 December 2009. < http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15717>.
