Welcome to 5 th Grade. Mr. Granger Ms. McCord Mrs. Relf. Rotation. Textbooks. All math textbooks will remain at home to be used for homework. Some other textbooks will remain at home depending on homerooms. Fewer books will help with the weight of the bookbags on the students’ backs.

  1. Welcome to 5th Grade Mr. Granger Ms. McCord Mrs. Relf

  2. Rotation

  3. Textbooks • All math textbooks will remain at home to be used for homework. • Some other textbooks will remain at home depending on homerooms. • Fewer books will help with the weight of the bookbags on the students’ backs.

  4. Bookbags • No rolling bookbags. • Bookbags will be unpacked every morning and stored in a locker. • Clean bookbags out every weekend. • One binder for all subjects. Please help your child stay organized.

  5. Reading • Reading grade consists of daily grades and test grades from Scott Foresman textbook as well as posttests. • Fluency goal is 140 words per minute by the end of the year. • AR goal will be based on S.T.A.R. score. • Students are expected to read their AR book for 20 minutes a minimum of 5 out of 7 nights per week. This reading log should be signed. It is a homework grade.

  6. History/Science • Study guides will be completed by the students in class as we progress through the chapter. • Study guides will be graded and should be signed in order to earn bonus points.

  7. Math • Does your child know his/her multiplication facts 0-12????? • If not, start this weekend! • It is IMPERATIVE that 5th graders KNOW their multiplication facts. • Please practice 10 minutes nightly until mastered. • Pretest Monday!!

  8. Language • Language study guides will be given at least 2 days prior to the test. Please check and sign for bonus points.

  9. Spelling • Spelling homework will be given each week. • Spelling tests each Friday.

  10. Homework • No regular Wed. night homework. • Spelling homework due Friday. • Nightly math. • Reading log 5 out of 7 nights. • Science/History/Language will vary. *All homework and tests will be posted on our Homework Newsletter which will be placed in your child’s binder each Monday. Please sign the newsletter every Monday night. It remains in your child’s binder as the first paper.

  11. Conduct • Please contact us via email, a note, or a phone call with any concerns. • You will be informed each Friday of your child’s conduct grade. It will be a letter grade. Please sign and return on Mondays.

  13. Dress Code • Tennis shoes must be worn daily. • Shirts: white, classic navy, red/polo style, long or short sleeve • Pants: khaki or classic navy/pants, shorts, skorts, skirts, jumpers or capris • No over-sized or excessive jewlery/no bangle bracelets

  14. Signed Papers • We’ll send home work samples every other Friday. • Please check over them and return them by Tuesday.

  15. Conduct • Students are expected to follow the Montgomery County Code of Conduct at all times. • We will follow Head School’s Discipline plan as outlined in the Student Handbook. • Please make sure you update your phone number if it changes in case we need to call you and schedule a conference. • Misbehavior will be documented on a discipline log. • Classroom Discipline Plan will be sent home the first Friday. Please sign and return the bottom portion.

  16. “Friday Social Hour” • To increase the students’ desire to be responsible, we will have a weekly motivational time for students who are responsible and mannerly. Your child will not be invited to this social hour for the following reasons: • Not returning signed papers/conduct sheets on time • Not completing homework • Not returning notes sent home • Other responsibility or behavioral issues

  17. Social hour continued… • Every Monday students start over with a new conduct grade and a new chance at being invited to the Friday Social Hour. The final conduct grade for the report card will be a culmination of all these weekly conduct grades. • Those students who cannot attend on Friday will be seated outside while the others play.

  18. Office Referrals • An office referral will result in an automatic F in conduct for that week. • Remember the final conduct grade each grading period is a culmination of all 9 weeks.

  19. Juice/Snack Juice/snack will be sold Monday, Aug. 9. Also, the payment schedule is on page 18 in the Parent/Student Handbook. Weekly (Mon. or Tues.)/ monthly only. Juice .40 Snack .55 Students may bring their own acceptable juice and snack.

  20. Grading Scale • 90 – 100 A • 80 – 89 B • 70 – 79 C • 60 – 69 D • 59 or Lower F
