  2. Journal • “When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I survived at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while.” • What does McCourt mean by this quote? What event in your life was difficult, but “worth your while”?

  3. Background on Frank McCourt • Born in Brooklyn NY to recently immigrated Irish parents. • Father: struggled with alcoholism and unemployment • Mother: had to raise children in unrelenting poverty • Mid 1930’s: McCourts moved back to Ireland to better their lives, but it wasn’t any better in Ireland. • When McCourt was 19 he returned to the US to begin a new life. • Served in Korean War • GI Bill: NYU; teacher in NYC public schools

  4. Typhoid Fever • An infection spread through food, water, and milk contaminated with Salmonella typhi bacteria. • Diphtheria is a disease caused by bacteria that have been infected by certain viruses. • If left untreated, both diseases can be fatal.

Memoir • A type of narrative nonfiction that presents the story of a period in the writer’s life. • Usually written from the first person point of view • Emphasizes the narrator’s own experience of this period. • It may also reveal the impact of significant historical events on his or her life.
