  1. THE IMPORTANCE OF HEARING SCREENINGIN NEWBORNBABIES An Academic presentationby Dr. Nancy Agens, Head, Technical Operations, Pubrica Group: www.pubrica.com Email:sales@pubrica.com

  3. InBrief A hearing loss is one of the most common birth defects in newborns. Loss of hearing can impair hearing and can hinder speech and language. The early hearing screening in newborns is very important for the improvement of communicationskills

  4. Newborn babies undergo several examinations andassessments before leaving thehospital. The hearing screening is one of the essential evaluation for newborn babies before leaving in thehospital. Introduction Newborn screening and treatment help ensure the recognition as soon as possible of all babies who are deaf or hard ofhearing. They will access early intervention clinical support services that can make a big difference in their language development and communication.

  5. Loss of Hearing Occurs In NewbornBabies Loss of hearing is more likely to occurin: Babies with respiratory problems that require long-term use of a respirator and certaindrugs. Early born babies (premature). Infectionsbabies.

  6. Importance of HearingScreening Hearing screening is a first and crucial step in clinical research helping to understand whether your baby is deaf or hard tohear. Babies with poor or deaf hearing need the right support, care and early interventionto promote healthygrowth. If the hearing condition is not known, it can have adverse effects on communicationand language skills of thebabies. A missed hearing loss can also have an impact on the academic achievementand social-emotional development of the child over the longer term.

  7. Methods of HearingScreening Otoacoustic Emission(OAE): The recording of OAEs usually takes < 1 min and can be done without experience inaudiology. Two types that are commonly used for neonatal hearing screening is Distortion product OAEs and Transient evokedOAEs. Automated Auditory Brain Stem Response(AABR): Auditory brainstem response is an evoked auditory potential arising from the auditory nerve. It can detect weakness in the brainstem at the cochlea level, the auditory nerve and pathway. Both technologies provide non-invasive monitoring of physiologicalbehaviour.

  8. Benefits It is widely acknowledged that early detection of hearing loss gives children the chance to develop significantly improved language skills relative to those children who are laterdiagnosed. The primary objective of early intervention in newborns with hearing impairment is to improve the communication skills of the child and to enhance the level of language development influencing cognitive and socio-emotionalbehavior.

  9. Conclusion Hearing deficiency in children around the world, including language acquisition, poses a particularly serious barrier to their full growth andeducation. If the screening test indicates a possible hearing loss, further testing isrequired. All babies who don't pass the screening test should be checked by a hearingspecialist (audiologist) by age 3months. Before the baby is 6 months old, care for hearing loss should start, since it is an important time for speech and languagedevelopment.
