  1. 2,000 years in the making, 2 weeks to record,2 days to archive, too difficult to reference? How DataCite is unlocking the potential of archaeological datasets

  2. Roadmap • The Archaeology Data Service • Background • Case Study • DataCite • Why? • Archives • Grey Literature

  3. Introduction to the ADS • The Archaeology Data Service: • set up in 1996 • one of five AHDS subject centres • based within the University of York • Funding: • initially received funding from • Arts and Humanities Research Board (now AHRC) • Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) • Presently receives core funding from AHRC alongside a range of project-based funding.

  4. ADS Mission Statement: What we do • Our remit: • “To support research, learning and teaching with high quality and dependable digital resources.” • In practice this means three key things: • That ADS collect and preserve datasets • That we allow full, easy and free access to these • And that we additionally provide guidance and support to data creators

  5. Why is long-term storage of digital data difficult? • Deterioration of the storage medium • Obsolescence of the storage medium • Failure to document the format adequately • Obsolescence of the software • Obsolescence of the hardware • Long-term management

  6. Case Study: The Newham Archive Archive: 6432 individual files 1500 excavation reports 700 database files 1200 geophysics files 200 separate projects approx. 150 excavations Lessons: Physical Media not the main problem Software problems (migration) Data to information (documentation) Plan for re-use Forward planning is much cheaper Preservation from the outset
