  2. The Greek Dark Ages • People forgot how to write. • People left all the old cities • People became more nomadic and pastoral • The population dropped dramatically • Lasted about 200 years

  6. End of the Dark Ages Polis began to emerge along the shorelines and trade routes. Two of the most famous are Athens and Sparta. We will learn about them next week.

  7. Monotheistic Greek Monos means single Greek Theos means God Only one God Only one set of Rules Only one ruler to please Polytheistic Greek Poly means many Greek Theos means God Many Gods Many sets of Rules Many rulers to please Many rituals and mythologies. God or Gods?

  8. What About the Gods? • There were Gods for everything. • How did they keep all the Gods happy? • There are two types of Polytheism: • Henotheism believe in many gods but specialize in worshipping and serving only one god. • Kathenotheism worship different Gods at different times.

  9. Greek Gods • Many of the people were Henotheistic and would dedicate their lives to one particular god/goddess • Many others would be Kathenotheistic and worship the god/goddess they needed at that time. • Who were some of these Gods?

  10. Assignment Week 6 • Using wire hangers, index cards, string, and tape create a mobile of the Greek Gods and Goddess family tree. • IEW Keyword outline and paragraph on the Ancient Greek beliefs. • Each child chooses one myth to share next week. They must “be” the main character. Written in the first person.

  11. Book List Week 6 • Percy Jackson, by Rick Riordan • Treasury of Greek Mythology, Classic Stories of Gods, Goddesses, Heroes, and Monsters by Donna Jo Napoli this book has gorgeous illustrations.. • D’Aulaires Greek Myths There is a great teacher text and student book that covers these myths.
