  1. Alternative Energy Evaluation May 06-16 Design Presentation Team Makeup: Steven Chebuhar Anhtuan Dinh Ryan Ferneau Justin Jorgensen

  2. Project Objective • Develop internet based program to help a user evaluate the applicability of various alternative energy sources • Sources considered are: • Wind, solar, hydro, microturbines, fuel cells, heat pumps, biomass, energy storage • User inputs • Program output

  3. End User • User may be rural or urban • Must reside in Iowa (as of now) • Must have basic computer skills • Must be able to obtain current energy usage information • Must have access to Internet Explorer

  4. Alternate Energy Sources • Most of our time was spent on research • Sources were split among the group members • Each source was analyzed for the advantages and disadvantages

  5. Sources Wind Fuel Cells MicroHydro Solar Biomass Primary Microturbine DieselGen. CompressedAir User Considerations Thermal Backup Storage Utility Battery Pumped GasTurbine User

  6. Internet Based Program • Why did we decide to use Internet based? • Easiest for team to implement and easiest for user • Easier to operate and maintain • Using Microsoft office FrontPage to create the website • Possibly add an embedded Java program

  7. Input Data • Clickable map for location input • Other inputs • Urban or rural location • Average monthly usage • Peak energy usage • User’s primary concern (save money, use as primary source, or environmental)

  8. Output Data • Recommended sources • Estimated startup/maintenance costs • Determine payback period by estimating future inflation and interest rates

  9. Additional Information • Links to other sites for more information or purchase of equipment • Information for connecting to utility • Information on selling power back to utility
