Proton Therapy Remains Viable Choice for Prostate Cancer Treatment The use of proton therapy for the treatment of cancer continues to climb as more patients and their healthcare providers realize the potential benefits. This highly targeted treatment remains a viable option for prostate cancer patients where it is available. Proton therapy is a form of radiation that draws on protons instead of X-rays to irradiate cancer. Just like standard radiation, proton therapy kills off cancer cells at their source. The extreme precision proton therapy delivers makes it a popular choice for treatments of such cancers as prostate. While proton therapy hasn’t been widely available across the United States because of the specialty equipment required, that is changing. Prostate cancer remains the most common form of cancer treated with proton therapy. This option is preferred by some patients and their healthcare providers for prostate cancer because of its potential ability to limit side effects while effectively treating cancer. It is estimated about 160,000 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the coming year. Proton therapy may be a viable option for some men, depending on the specifics of their unique case. Prostate cancer is a concern for all men as they age. This disease is most commonly diagnosed in men in their 60s, but becomes an increasing concern starting around the age of 50 or so. As a result, it is recommended that men undergo routine screening for this disease as indicated by their healthcare providers.
