  2. Finance Workers: What to Do Once You Become Disillusioned with Exploitative Capitalism There are no two ways about it, the financial industry is a huge racket, and it is wreaking havoc throughout the world. The ordinary people feel as if they are on a large ship being buffeted by a storm. Sometimes we’re riding the top of the storm, sometimes we’re in the trough and holding on for dear life. This is the nature of capitalism in the modern age: boom and bust. Once you’ve worked within the financial industries for a number of years, you can see how it’s all controlled by the large banks and corporations. They create problems for ordinary people who, much of the time, are only just holding on. For some people who work within the financial industries, this can lead to feelings of despair. It can feel as if they are some type of puppet master, helping to pull strings that make money for them, but lead others into the pits of financial ruin.

  3. When this happens, it can lead people to want to give up on their career. They want to move elsewhere, so that they can help, rather than hinder the unfair nature of capitalism. They wonder if they should just walk away, but they realise that, without experience, they will have to start at the bottom of another career path, and this can seem like a waste. They view it as a waste of their academic time (if they have a finance degree), a waste of their working life, and a waste of the life they have thus far built. What can you do when you're in this situation? Well, there are a number of things that you can do to help remove yourself from what now appears to be an exploitative career. Here are a few ideas:

  4. 1. You can look for finance jobs in charities. Here, you get to use all of your experience (which at this stage may feel ill-gotten) to help, rather than hinder people. Choose your charity carefully. Make sure that they are operating in a manner that sits well with your conscience. You can then use everything you’ve learned over time to find the best results for the charity. This way, any “ill-gotten” money can be funnelled back to a good cause.

  5. 2. You can look for finance jobs with HMRC. OK, so for some of you, this may not appear to work well, but when you think about it, by helping the HMRC, you are at least some way in helping the rest of society. Yes, the government may spend their money unwisely, but they also do spend money on good things too: education, health, infrastructure, and welfare to name a few. Despite the common view of the HMRC, they are actually much fairer than people assume. For example, if people have failed to declare their taxes, in the past, that would have warranted a prison sentence. Nowadays, in many cases, they allow you to come forward and pay your tax bill. They no longer actively try to take people’s homes and properties. They’ve realised that, in the long-run, this is more damaging to society.
