Results • Abraham Lincoln becomes our 16th President with 38% of the vote • 10 of the southern states don’t even have Lincoln on the ballot • Southern states did not want any more compromise • “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.” Abraham Lincoln.

  5. Secession • South Carolina left U.S. on Dec. 20, 1860 • By Feb. 1861 these states followed: • Alabama • Florida • Georgia • Louisiana • Mississippi • Texas “The people of the South don’t know what they are doing. This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end.” William Tecumseh Sherman, after South Carolina secedes from the Union.

  6. Confederate States of America • President – Jefferson Davis of Mississippi • While it was illegal for states to simply leave the Union, Lincoln said there would be no war unless the South started it.

  7. War Begins • Confederates begin seizing Federal forts, post offices, and other federal buildings in the South. • By April, the Union held only 3 forts, including Ft. Sumter in Charlestown, South Carolina.

  9. Attack on Ft. Sumter • President Lincoln attempted to resupply the fort, promised South he wouldn’t send troops • Confederates attacked on April 11th, 1861 • Major Robert Anderson surrendered on April 13th

  11. Ft. Sumter • “It seemed impossible to escape suffocation. The roaring and crackling of the flames, the dense masses of whirling smoke, the bursting of enemy shells, and our own which were exploding in the burning rooms, the crashing of the shot, and the sound of masonry falling in every direction, made the fort a pandemonium.” Cpt. Abner Doubleday at Ft. Sumter.
