Aims • Have an overview of the skills tested at GCSE and • the weighting of each of these skills on the overall • mark. • Understand how each skill is assessed. • Be able to help with learning techniques for • controlled writing assessments • Be able to help your child reflect upon his/her own work • and performance.

  3. GCSE 2011 GCSE in French/German changed in 2009! This is only the third year of the new GCSE.

  4. GCSE 2011 Like in KS3, students work on and are tested on the following skills: • Listening • Speaking • Reading • Writing

  5. GCSE 2011 How the four skills make up your final grade:

Listening and Reading The topic areas you cover are: • Out and About • Transport and directions • Weather • Local amenities • Customer service and • transactions • Cafés and restaurants • Shops • Problems • Personal information • Family and friends • Healthy eating and • exercise • Interests and leisure • Future plans, Education • and Work • Job ads, applications, CVs • School and college • Basic language of internet

Listening and Reading • Both exams are at the end of year 11. • Students can do foundation or higher. • All questions and rubrics are in English. • There is no French/German at all on the listening paper, but one question in French/German on the higher reading paper. • Students only need to write two or three words per answer.

  8. Listening and Reading • Foundation listening exam : 30 minutes • Higher listening exam : 40 minutes • Foundation reading exam : 35 minutes • Higher reading exam : 50 minutes

Speaking and Writing • Sport and Leisure • Hobbies and interests • Sporting events • Lifestyle choices • Media and Culture • Music, film and reading • Fashion, celebrities and • religion • Blogs and the internet The topic areas you cover are: • Travel and Tourism • Holidays • Accommodation • Eating, food and drink • Business, work and • employment • Work experience and jobs • Product or service • information Or…a ‘centre devised’ option!

Speaking • There are three different types of speaking task. • Students do two different tasks. • Each task takes 4-6 minutes. • We usually do at least three so we can enter the best marks. • They can be done at any point over the two years. • You get up to 6 hours of lesson time to prepare for your task.

  11. Different Speaking Tasks • Task 1: we discuss a picture students bring in. • Task 2: students give a 2-3 minute presentation then the teacher asks some questions about it. • Task 3: students are given a stimulus (e.g. an advert for a leisure centre), which we discuss.

  12. The lead up …. Students are told at the beginning of the unit that they will be completing a speaking assessment at the end of the unit. 5 – 7 weeks of lessons on that topic Exam Preparation (2 lessons) Students use their books & dictionaries Lesson 1 Task given Student start their draft of what they want to say Lesson 2 & HMK Student finish their draft of What they want to say 4-6 minute Controlled assessment (each student is Given their time and venue in advance) 30 words notes

  13. Ways to support(Speaking) • Do you want to practise saying it to me? • FRENCH - Are you keeping the last letter of words silent? (Except if there’s a vowel/silent ‘h’ on next word) • Have you practised it enough times to feel confident? • Have you timed what you want to say? How long is it? • Have you completed your notes sheet?

  14. Writing • Students have to do two different tasks. • We usually do three so we can enter the best marks. • They can be done at any point over the two years. • You get up to 6 hours of lesson time to prepare for your task. • Each assessment can only take an hour.

  16. Exercise books YOUR EXERCISE BOOKS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! It is vital that you bring your book to every lesson, that you glue sheets in and that you keep your book as neat as possible. It will be invaluable when you are preparing for controlled assessments.

  17. Ways to support(Writing) • Have you made sure you have capitalised all nouns (German)? • Is it 200 words or more? Have you completed your notes sheet? • Are the words in the right order? • Have you included connectives? • Could you write about someone else too? • What grade do you think this piece of work is and why? • What else is there in your ex. book can you add? • Can you add something in another tense? • Have you given your opinion?

  18. Once they have written their draft … Is it at least 200 words long? Is it at least 200 words long? Check, check and check again. Check, check and check again. Label that copy as MASTER COPY. This copy is not to be altered/lost.
