TREES -Woody plant that can grow from a few inches to thousands of feet tall. -While trees of different species vary greatly in size, shape and overall appearance they are all made up of three basic things. 1. Crown- Upper part of the tree that contains branches, twigs, and leaves. Where the tree collects energy from the sun. 2. Roots- Anchor the tree in the ground, store sugars, and take in water and minerals the tree needs to live. 3. Trunk-Primarymeans of support for the tree, contains many layers including outer bark, cambium, and heartwood.

  3. Bark -The hard outer cover of the trunk and branches of trees and other woody plants -Used by the tree as protection

  4. Cambium - a layer of cells between the bark and wood in the trunk of trees -Produces new bark

  5. Heartwood -Wood at the center of a tree trunk or branch that is older, darker, and harder than the wood surrounding it -Main purpose is to support, or hold up, the tree

  6. Growth Rings -Rings on the inside of a tree’s trunk -Counting a trees rings will tell us how old it is -When counting rings, 1 dark ring and 1 light ring together equals 1 year of growth
