  1. Primitive Survivors - Tarps vs. Tents: Which One is Better? Are you deciding whether to use a tent or tarp on your next camp? Picking between the two is a vital part of your gear decisions because the right shelter can determine your overall outdoor experience. So which one is better, a tarp or tent? Here are their pros and cons. Tent Pros Tens are the most commonly used item when camping. That’s because they have a more defined structure that is ideal for bug season and cold weather. You also don’t have to look for poles or tents to pitch it. All it takes is even ground and you’re ready. There are also tents that can fit a lot of people. This is great when you plan on camping with your family. Unlike the tarp, you can enclose yourself in a tent with zippers. You’ll be protected from snakes, bears, rodents, and more.

  2. Primitive Survivors - Tarps vs. Tents: Which One is Better? Tent Cons It’s clear why many, especially families, prefer a tent over a tarp. However, tents aren’t always perfect. Here are some disadvantages you get when choosing a tent. First, tents are heavier and bulkier. They take up a lot of space and weight. If you’re going for a long hike before arriving at the campsite, it’s not ideal to carry one around. Tents come with parts like poles, pegs, and other accessories.  Tents may also relatively cost an arm and leg. If you want a lightweight tent, you need to spend more money just to get those that are made of cuben fiber.  Lastly, unlike the tarp, tents cannot always adjust to your needs. They may be easy to set up but you can’t tweak them to serve other purposes, like a groundsheet or something to block the wind.

  3. Primitive Survivors - Tarps vs. Tents: Which One is Better? Tarp Pros Tarps are the best choice if you’re looking for something lightweight. The lightest ones are around 140 grams and they are made of Cuben fiber or Dyneema. Even the heaviest tarps are much lighter than the usual tents because they do not have walls, floors, and netting. This also means you can pack down very small. If you’re looking to save money, then you can also use a tarp instead of a tent. It’s cheap, along with the string and stakes. But just because it is more affordable doesn’t mean it’s not high-quality. So many durable and waterproof tarps are available out there and won’t hurt your pockets. Another advantage of using a tarp is that it’s multi-purpose. You can use it to sit on the ground or set it up to block wind and make a shady spot for you to rest during the day. They are also easy to adjust to your needs! Aside from the many ways to pitch a tarp, it’s also easier to fit your condition because you won’t have to set up your bivy if there are no bugs.

  4. Primitive Survivors - Tarps vs. Tents: Which One is Better? Tarp Cons You’ve heard about the benefits of a tarp over a tent. However, tarps are also harder to set up. Although it caters to your camping needs, you also have to adapt to the surroundings. The way you pitch your tarps depends on the terrain of your campsite as well as the weather. Besides, they’re also not free-standing. They’re easier to bring because you still have to find something to tie your tarp to, like a pole or trees. In addition, while tarps can be marketed as water-resistant, you may still get wet from tarps. Rain can easily blow in the sides under it. As the ground gets wet, so do you. And since you can easily get wet, you can also get easily cold. They are open, so they cannot trap heat.

  5. Primitive Survivors - Tarps vs. Tents: Which One is Better? Verdict The truth is, there is no perfect shelter when you’re going on an outdoor adventure. And no one wins in a debate about tarps or tent because they’re both good in their own ways. If you prioritize the load you are carrying, customizability, and affordability, then go for a tarp. But if you would rather have something that is easy to pitch and is more protective against the elements, go for a tent.
