  1. Development, Simulation and Optimization of Oncology Laboratory Sample Processing Automation Emily Salmon Norman Purvis, PhD, Esoterix

  2. Project Overview Blood and Bone marrow and tissue samples undergo a process using monoclonal antibodies performed by certified technicians. Using flow cytometers, results of certain cell populations are analyzed for conditions related to leukemia and lymphoma. Ultimately, manual processing is desired to be completely automated as a result of the many benefits of such a move.

  3. Aspects of Project • 1.) Understand basic screening procedures; Determine types of equipment that can perform the process. • 2.) Simulate the procedure using laboratory automation software; compare automated to manual time estimates. • 3) Review Process, Verify Results, and Optimize Automation.

  4. Research • Observed a laboratory (Allergy Testing) that uses automated laboratory equipment. • Observed Oncology department and became familiar with the types of steps performed in the screening process. • Gathered time estimates for each step performed by technicians as well as for the overall screening.

  5. Work • Discussed with advisor, Dr. Norman Purvis, possible differences between automation and manual screening procedures. • Determined three categories of equipment that could be used (for centrifugation, vacuum, or single volume process). • Considered existing allergy lab equipment for oncology lab use.

  6. Next Stage • Simulation software setup for equipment that performs each type of operation as well as for the system that drives the devices. • Plan to develop protocols in the simulations and work on them until the automation software generates optimal times.
