  2. What does “suicide by cop” mean? • An actual form of suicide and defined as an incident where a suicidal individual intentionally engages in life-threatening and criminal behavior with a lethal weapon or what appears to be a lethal weapon toward law enforcement officers or civilians specifically to provoke officers to shoot the suicidal individual in self-defense or to protect civilians.

  3. What happens? • If a person engages in an attempt to commit suicide in front of a cop, usually they show the intention to die. • Most likely provoke police officer into shooting them by threatening the cop. • Sometimes they take others with them (bystanders, family members, friends, etc.) • 80% of the time, the suicidal person is armed with a weapon; 60% of those weapons are firearms.

  4. More Info • Suicide-by-Cop accounted for 11% percent of all deputy-involved shootings. • As well as 13% of all deputy-involved justified homicides. • Victim-Precipitated Homicide • Death-by-Cop • Suicide by Police • Blue Suicide

  5. How do all of these incidents affect the mental health of the Cops who make the decisions to make the next move in a deadly situation? • On March 26, 2008, the LAPD’s Chief Psychologist, Kevin Jablonski, told the Police Commission that the cops were twice as likely to kill themselves as to be killed in the line of duty. • To help change those stats, the LAPD started it’s first suicide prevention program. • The LAPD’S suicide rate is higher than that of New York’s Police, and most other big city forces
