Kitchen Safety. Use a stepstool to reach high cabinets. Stepstools are under the sink in kitchen 5. The fire extinguisher and fire blanket are located to the right of the classroom door in the red firebox. Use only DRY oven mitts to get things from the oven, microwave or stovetop.

  2. Use a stepstool to reach high cabinets. • Stepstools are under the sink in kitchen 5

  3. The fire extinguisher and fire blanket are located to the right of the classroom door in the red firebox.

  4. Use only DRY oven mitts to get things from the oven, microwave or stovetop. • Stand to the side of the oven door when putting food into the oven or taking it out.

  5. Always stack equipment neatly so it does not fall from the cabinet or counter onto the floor.

  6. When opening a can open it all the way around, not partially. It can give you a dangerous cut.

  7. Remember….. • Water and electricity do not mix. • Hands and feet should be dry when using electrical appliances. • Counters and floor should be dry when using electrical appliances.

  8. Do not use extension cords with appliances. • Do not overload circuits.

  9. Pull on the plug, not the cord when unplugging an appliance.

  10. Take kitchen trash out daily. Don’t let it get overloaded. • Keep trash in a covered container. • Recycle when possible.

  11. Do not leave cabinet doors or drawers open. Close doors and drawers immediately after getting equipment and tools out.

  12. Tie hair back and roll up sleeves when cooking at the stove. • Avoid wearing baggy clothing when cooking at the stove.

  13. Always wear shoes when working in the kitchen. • Sandals, flip-flops and bare feet are dangerous. • High heels and platform shoes can cause you to twist an ankle or slip. • Keep shoe laces tied to avoid tripping.

  14. Keep saucepan handles turned in to avoid them from being pulled down and burning someone.

  15. Always clean up spills immediately. • Brooms, mops, and dustpans are located to the right side of the washing machine

  16. Get clean dish towels and cloths from the white laundry basket for each lab. • Place soiled towels, cloths and sponges in the blue laundry basket at the end of the lab for cleaning.

  17. Be careful of your movement in the foods lab. • Running, skipping and fast movements can cause accidents to you or someone else. • MOVE CAUTIOUSLY IN LAB!!!
