  2. Purpose: The purpose of this research study is to examine the relationship between drug behavior portrayed in the media and society’s attitudes, beliefs, and/or perceptions of drug behaviors.

  3. Cultivation Theory: • Cultivation theory examines the long-term effects of media exposure on our perceptions of reality (Gerbner, 1998). • Violence • Marriage • Smoking • Political views

  4. Drug use in this study is defined as the abuse or casual use of prescription drugs (Peterson et al., 1976), use of illegal narcotics (Narcotic Analgesics & Aspirin, 2012), or any other substance that has physiological effects when ingested (R.h., 2013).

  5. First Variable: • Drug Behavior Drug behavior is any situation that involves drugs, includingusing, distributing, making, or buying drugs.

  6. Second variable: • Media Exposure Media exposure includes variables of media that affect the formation of social reality beliefs in regards to frequency, recency, and vividness (Riddle et al., 2011).

  8. Hypothesis • People who watch shows with drug behavior involved in the content will more likely have more positive attitudes and perceptions of drug behavior than those who watch television shows not involving drug behavior

  9. Research Question: • Does the viewership of television shows portraying drug behavior have impact on their attitudes and perceptions?

  10. Methods • Participants: • 317 people; 69% were female, 31% were male, 1% other • Network/snowball sampling • Measures • Quantitative research in form of online survey • Procedures • Consent form • Survey • Data analysis

  12. RESULTs • An ANOVA comparing television genres found no significant differences among the groups on attitude toward drug behavior on television, F(9,302)=.90, >.05

  14. Results cont. • Males watch significantly more Sports Center than females, t(308) = 5.44, p < .05. • Overall, men have more positive attitudes toward drug behavior than females, t(309) = -3.23, p < .05.
