Why ?

  • Theory plays an increasingly large role in application-oriented research, because of

    • Growing knowledge of phenomena at deeper level

    • Rapidly increasing power of computers and modelling

    • Need for cost-saving predictive power

  • Growing number of theorists / simulators across TN department

    • ‘Netwerk Theoretische Fysica’ with over 15 staff theorists / simulators across all focus areas / tracks

  • There are always students with more theoretical / computational interests

  • / Applied Physics


    Theory for technology

    What ?

    • You follow the regular courses of your chosen track

    • You select optional courses of more theoretical character

      • From the existing track-specific courses

      • From specially developed Capita Selecta Theoretical Physics

      • Including an ‘active’ and ‘interactive’ Theoretical Student Seminar

  • You choose your final-year project on a theory / simulation subject

    • Opportunities in all tracks and groups

  • You still keep room for other courses and experimental work

  • You get an annotation ‘Theoretical Physics for Technology’ on your Masters Diploma Supplement

  • / Applies Physics


    How 88 ects

    How ? 88 ECTS

    • 10 ECTS for the three TN-mandatory courses

    • 10 ECTS for track courses with ‘theoretical character’ (listed on web)

      • Including most track-mandatory courses

      • Including 3 ECTS (preferably) from other track

  • 5 ECTS Capita Selecta Theoretical Physics

    • Flexible, max. 2 ECTS per Caput

    • Next years:

      Irreversible Statistical Physics, Theory of Liquids, Percolation and Fractals

      Quantum Field Theory, Collision Theory, Theory of Phase Transitions

  • 3 ECTS Theoretical Student Seminar

    • You learn to actively participate with discussion and presentation

    • Informal and stimulating academic atmosphere
