  3. Location of Biome • The open ocean is located passed the coastal waters. • It is the deeper areas of the ocean Anchors away!

  4. Physical Characteristics • Temperature: 0° to 40° C • Salinity: 35 parts per thousand • Depth: The depth varies between 200 to 11,000 meters. • Water Flow: There are warm ocean currents Here fishy, fishy, fishy!

  5. Base of Food Web • Phytoplankton are the base of the food web. • The zooplankton eat the phytoplankton. • The larger organisms eat the zooplankton. Fish are friends, not food.

  6. Animals • Fish • Whales • Sharks • Squid • Dolphins • Plankton • Swordfish • Krill • Cuttlefish

  7. Zones • Epipelagic Zone: 200 meters deep • Mesopelagic Zone: 200 to 1000 meters • Bathypelagic Zone: 1000 to 4000 meters • Abyssopelagic Zone: 4000 to 6000 meters • Hadopelagic Zone: greater than 6000 meters Just keep swimming!

  8. Fun Facts • Tsunamis are only 12 inches high in the open ocean! • Ocean Acidification takes place here! • The deeper you go the colder it gets! • The deeper you go the less light there is! Brrrrr! I wish I had fur!
