Strategic Objectives and Targets for 2011/12 • SO: Biodiversity conserved, protected and threats mitigated -0.5% increase in land under conservation • 4 provinces with established programmes • 5 000 ha of private land proclaimed, with contracts and management plans, according to National Environmental Management Protected Areas Act (NEMPAA), per province

Strategic Objectives and Targets for 2011/12 • SO : Biodiversity conserved, protected and threats mitigated (cont) • TOPS regulations amended and published • Norms and standards for the management of Damage causing animals finalized • 1st draft norms and standards for the translocation of large herbivores developed • 1st draft discussion document for the regulation of the hunting industry in South Africa developed • Non-Detriment Findings (NDFs) and quotas made by Scientific Authority published (at least 5 NDFs per annum) • 85% Threatened or Protected Species (ToPS) and Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) permit applications received, processed within prescribed timeframe

Strategic Objectives and Targets for 2011/12 • SO : Biodiversity conserved, protected and threats mitigated (cont) • Draft Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) for Black Rhino; encephelartoslatifrons and pelargonium sidoidefinalized • Draft BMP for African Penguin consulted and published for public comments • Management plans finalised for Blesbokspruit, Ntsikeni, Makuleke, Verlorenvlei, Orange River Mouth • Management plans for five more wetlands of international importance initiated • 100 Wetlands rehabilitated

Strategic Objectives and Targets for 2011/12 • SO : Biodiversity conserved, protected and threats mitigated (cont) • Process for approval and publication of Minimum requirements for biodiversity in land use planning and Integrated Environmental Management (IEM) initiated • Process for approval and publication of Mining and Biodiversity-Good Practice Guidelines for South Africa initiated • GIS based spatial land use planning tool developed: Phase 1 • 100% of Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) applications assessed for environmental compliance

Strategic Objectives and Targets for 2011/12 • SO : Biodiversity conserved, protected and threats mitigated • 5 tools developed and implemented to address threats • Alien Invasive Species (AIS) regulations published and implemented • Risk assessment framework for AIS and guideline for evaluation developed • 1st draft guidelines for Monitoring and Control Plans developed • Initiate the development of the National Strategy for AIS • Species management and eradication programmes developed

Strategic Objectives and Targets for 2011/12 • SO: Biodiversity conserved, protected and threats mitigated • Vulnerability assessments completed for all biomes • 800 hectares of Land rehabilitated - Research Programmes • New species research programme initiated • Biosafety research programme implemented • Institutionalize the coordination of Desertification, Land degradation and Drought (DLDD) research

Strategic Objectives and Targets for 2011/12 • SO: Improved Compliance with Environmental legislation • Biodiversity Compliance • Compliance Monitoring Framework for National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act finalised ,National Environmental Management Protected Areas Act and World Heritage CITES Act developed • 2 Coordinated national and international Compliance Operations/ inspections organized and executed • Biodiversity Enforcement • Assessment of Biodiversity Enforcement Strategies of 3 countries undertaken and the best practice model identified • 1 specialised training course for Biodiversity Environmental Management Inspectors (EMI’s) organised • Awareness raising strategic plan developed

Strategic Objectives and Targets for 2011/12 • SO 4: Fair access and equitable sharing of benefits from biological resources promoted • Wildlife Sector transformation negotiations initiated (situational analysis on broader biodiversity sector) • 80 % of Biodiversity Access and Benefit Sharing (BABS) permits applications assessed • Guidelines for negotiating, concluding and evaluation benefit sharing agreements finalised • Ratification of Nagoya Protocol • 1 co-management agreement facilitated

  16. Strategic Objectives and Targets for 2011/12 • SO: Enhanced international governance, instruments and agreements supportive of South Africa’s environmental and sustainable development priorities • 2 integrated conservation and development plans initiated for TFCA’s • 1 cross border trail established • 50 animals Translocated • 3 projects in the TFCAs investment catalogue financed by investors as a result of investment promotion • 2 awareness raising campaigns held under Boundless Southern Africa
