  3. BASIC INFO Big population (240 million) Large territory (Europe --- from London to Moscow) 3

  4. The largest Muslim population • The third largest democracy in the world • Rich in natural resources of various kinds • Strategic location: • Passage way connecting Indian and Pacific Ocean • Size of its economy • 6 times bigger than Vietnam; almost twice as big as Thailand • Total trade of US$ 132 billion (2008) • Size of its middle class: • 26 million (almost as big as the whole population of malaysia) • Percapita income: US$ 4000 (based on ppp)

ECONOMIC PERFORMANCES • Indonesia is one emerging high growth market in Asia • Indonesia economic growth: 4.5% (2009); 5.9 % (2010); and 6.2 % (2011, estimated by World Bank) • Why? • Government takes serious measures to make Indonesia more competitive in trade and more attractive for investment Bloomberg 2009

  6. CHALLENGES • Improving infrastructure • Efficiency in regulations and bureaucracy • Global economic turndown • Other Challenges such as corruption, terrorism and natural disasters

  7. RI-IRELAND BILATERAL RELATIONS • 26 years of bilateral ties • Enjoying strong basis Fellow democracies Partners in dealing with common global and regional challenges (counter-terrorism, climate change, WMD proliferation, promoting democracy and HR, etc)

  8. But there is still an ample room to promote bilateral cooperation Trade balance between Indonesia and Ireland US$ 1.49 billion based on Enterprise Ireland’s data (2009)

  9. Commitment to promote closer bilateral ties Ireland-Indonesia Business Network on 26 May 2010 (officiated by Ambassador O’Brien) Ireland-Indonesia Friendship Group (estb 12 November 2008) to promote parliament-to-parliament contacts

  10. Initiative to establish Bilateral Consultation Forum between the two Foreign Ministries Opportunity to send more Indonesian lecturers to study in Ireland.
