  1. Key Understandings and Guiding Questions: There are ten major organ systems that allow the human body to function. — What organs allow each system to function? — What is the main function of each system? No body system works alone. — What body systems work together?

  2. The human body is a collection of organ systems working together. • The circulatory system uses the heart, blood vessels, and blood to transport nutrients and oxygen to the body. • The respiratory system is responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide using the trachea, lungs, and diaphragm.

  3. The skeletal system provides structure and protection using bones and ligaments. • The muscular system allows movement using skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles. • The integumentary system protects our body with the skin, hair, and nails. • The digestive system breaks down food to provide energy and nutrients using the esophagus, stomach, and intestine.

  4. The excretory system gets rid of body waste using the kidneys and ureterand urethra • The reproductive system produces offspring. • The nervous system coordinates the body and sends and receives signals throughout the body using organs such as the brain, spinal cord, nerves and sense organs. • The endocrine system regulates the body using hormones produced in glands.
