  2. Classroom Reminders Class 5C is a nut free class. When preparing lunches, please keep this in mind. Be mindful of the changes in weather!

  3. Birthday Celebrations There has been a change to birthday celebrations. Italian ices and ice pops are no longer allowed in school.

  4. A Day in the Life of a 5C Student Unpack, copy homework Reading Writing Specials Computers/Library/Read Aloud Lunch Math Science (1:50-2:30 Monday-Thursday) Social Studies (2:30-3:10 M-W, 1:50 F)

  5. Literacy Curriculum Done in two workshops for reading and writing. Short lessons on a topic that students engage in their work on that given day. Students share their findings with the class or build on their ideas the next day.

  6. Reading Workshop Building Good Reading Habits (current) Realistic Fiction and Social Issues Mystery Nonfiction Text Sets Historical Fiction Book Clubs Author Study Fantasy and Science Fiction

  8. Math Math is done in the new Math in Focus curriculum. MIF has an online component through ThinkCentral, which allows you to look at practice materials, manipulatives, the student edition of the text from home, and other great resources. Assigned a review activity to check it out!

  10. Math in Focus • Uses a CPA model for demonstrating new concepts. • Manipulative use for new concepts.

Math Units of Study Whole Numbers (rounding, place value) Multiplication and Division Fractions and Mixed Numbers (unlike denominators) Multiplying and Dividing Fractions Decimals Multiplying and dividing decimals Surface area and volume Graphs and probability Geometry (triangles and 4 sided figures) Algebra (unknowns, equations) Angles Geometry (revisited)

  12. Science Pond Life Astronomy Flight Mrs. O’Brien teaches our science class. Students have a quiz on Thursday!

  13. Social Studies Beginning in the Age of Exploration, students progress forward in time to the founding of the United States of America. Students also gain an understanding of American geography (name all 50 states, abbreviations, capitols) Piloting lessons from new TCI curriculum.

  14. Geography Quizzes • Each Tuesday, students in social studies will be assigned Daily Geography and a Mystery State. • There is a quiz on Tuesday on the three states we learned the previous week.

  15. Specials Schedule Mondays – Spanish and computers Tuesdays – Art and library Wednesdays – Gym Thursdays – Music and Spanish Fridays – Gym

  16. Spanish in 5th Grade Students have 80 minutes of Spanish per week. Senora Arosemena teaches the class. Students keep a notebook (binder) of all materials and are immersed in the language.

  17. What Happens this Year Students gain a greater sense of independence. Students take responsibility for their work. Expectations grow as we prepare students for the Junior School.

  18. Homework Homework is assigned on a nightly basis. 20 minutes of reading EVERY night. Math homework varies with what was covered in class. Science scoop – article monthly Weekly geography in Soc. St. Quizzes in Math, Science, and Soc. St.

  19. Homework Policy Homework is expected to be turned in on time. Missed homework must be made up. Always TRY! One tip is successfully manage time! Budget reading, study for tests in advance, and complete assignments on time.

  20. Extra Help • Math Clinic Thursdays 8:10 AM • Morning of tests, any subject, 8:20 AM • Students should ask about any questions they have on their homework.
