The Story - Setting Isabella (Bella) Swann’s mother is married to a traveling minor league baseball player, so Bella voluntarily leaves Phoenix, Arizona where she has always lived with her mother. She moves to Forks, Washington to live with her father, Charlie Swann. Most of the story takes place in this small town. Bella attends Forks High School.

  5. Bella Swann CHARACTERS: Always used to being a bit of an outcast, Bella is surprised by her sudden popularity at her new school. She is intelligent, studious, loyal, and naïve. She is the heroine of the novel, and the story is told from her perspective.

  6. Edward Cullen Edward is a vampire. He looks 17 but was born June 20th, 1901. He can read human minds (the only vampire with this ability), and lives with a family of vampires who abstain from drinking human blood. His adoptive father Carlisle Cullen changed him into a vampire because he was about to die from Spanish influenza.

  7. The Cullens: Edward Emmett Carlisle Rosalie Jasper Esme Alice

  8. Carlisle Cullen: vampire and surgeon who works at Forks Hospital. He is married to Esme, and he and she function as the parents to the other vampire characters. Esme Cullen: Beloved mother to Edward, Rosalie, Alice, and Jasper. She is a vampire and, therefore, does not age. The people of Forks understand that her and Carlisle’s “children” are adopted.

  9. Alice Cullen:One of Edward’s “sisters.” She looks like a teenager, but she was also born in 1901. She has the ability to foresee the future as long as a decision has been made. Alice is married to Jasper, another adopted son of Esme and Carlisle Cullen. She is 4’10’, very graceful, and very fast. Jasper Hale was turned into a vampire In 1863 when he was 20 years old. He has the ability to control the Emotional climate in a room. He is married to Alice.

  10. Rosalie Hale: Born in 1915, but looks 18 Rosalie is described as being astoundingly beautiful, even for a vampire; she is tall, statuesque, and has long, wavy blonde hair. She is mean to Bella & jealous of her being human. Rosalie is rather vain, self centered, and wishes to be human and have children Jasper Hale: Married to Rosalie, Adoptive son of Esme and Carlisle. Emmett is described as being tall, burly, extremely muscular, and, to most humans, the most intimidating of his adoptive siblings. He was born in 1915 and was turned into a vampire at 20.

  11. Other Characters: VAMPIRES • James: Major antagonist of the novel. He is a tracker. • Victoria: Member of James’ coven; also his lover. • Laurent: Also a member of James’ coven

  12. Other Characters - HUMANS: • Charlie Swann: Bella’s father. He is the sheriff of Forks. Loves his daughter very much but is uncomfortable with expressing his feelings. • Jacob Black: forgotten childhood friend of Bella's. Member of the Quileute tribe (Native American). • Billy Black: Jacob’s father. Very prejuduced against the Cullen family.

  13. Human friends at Bella’s school: • Jessica Stanley: "chatterbox" with curly dark hair; tends to be more interested in Bella's popularity than Bella's actual character. Not a good friend to Bella. • Mike Newton: friendly boy who initially has a crush on Bella; He has a strong dislike for Edward Cullen. Sometimes, a good friend to Bella. • Angela Weber: a tall, shy, quiet, and very kind girl. Good friend to Bella
