  4. There is more to the story… Setting: includes the time, location, and everything in which a story takes place. Plot - the arrangement of ideas and/or incidents that make up a story Tone/mood - the overall feeling created by a piece of writing Suspense - The tension that the author uses to create a feeling of discomfort about the unknown Conflict - Struggle between opposing forces. Flashback: a narrative technique that allows a writer to present past events during current events, in order to provide background for the current narration.Foreshadowing - When the writer clues the reader in to something that will eventually occur in the story; it may be explicit (obvious) or implied (disguised).

  5. There is more to the story… Character: a person who is responsible for the thoughts and actions within a story, poem, or other literature. Protagonist - The character the story revolves around. Antagonist - A character or force that opposes the protagonist. Characterization: Characters are presented by means of description, through their actions, speech, or thoughts. This can be done directly, the author tells you about the character or the reader has to infer what the character is like by interpreting the characters actions. Point of View - pertains to who tells the story and how it is told. Narrator - The person telling the story who may or may not be a character in the story. First-person - Narrator participates in action and refers to the character as "I" or “we”. Third-person- every character is referred to by the narrator as "he", "she", "it"

  6. There is more to the story… Exposition- establishing the setting and characters, plus giving any background needed to understand the story Rising Action - The process the story follows as it builds to its main conflict Climax - A significant turning point in the story that determines how it must end Falling Action - what events immediately follow the climax; a kind of "cleaning up." Resolution - The way the story turns out.
