Lesson Outcome All Students will understand what a computer virus / worm are, identify personal risks when using technology (e-safety), and discuss cyber bullying; Some students will explain prevention and protection. They will have definitions of Virus, Worm, Anti-Virus, Chat room, E-Safety, and Cyber bullying in the vocab sheet.

  4. Definition of the Keyword Virus A computer virus is a piece of program code that, like a biological virus, makes copies of itself by attaching itself to another program. The virus can waste the host's resources, and sometimes destroy or change files. A computer worm is a computer program that makes lots of copies of itself, like a computer virus. The main difference between the two is that a computer virus attaches itself to another computer program, but a worm works by itself.

Anti Virus Software • This is referring to software that can detect the presence of a virus within a computer file and warn you there is a problem. • The anti-virus software may then offer to 'quarantine' the file so it cannot be used to spread the virus. • Many packages will also try to remove the virus, but this is not always successful.

  11. Definition of Cyber Bullying • This is when the internet and the mobile phone is used to deliberately upset someone. • For example by sending nasty messages by text or email. Or posting messages meant to be private on public places like Facebook, Bebo or MySpace in order to embarrass or upset someone.

  12. In pairs what advice would you give a friend if they are being cyber bullied?

  13. Answer The best advice when this happens is to contact a parent or teacher to let them know it is happening. They will be able to make sure the bully is dealt with.
